  Firefox Hits 5% Market Share
Time: 13:45 EST/18:45 GMT | News Source: E-Mail | Posted By: Chris Hedlund

THE upstart free web browser Firefox has nibbled away more ground from Microsoft over the past month and now has a market share of nearly five per cent. Research group webSideStory said usage of Firefox, created by the non-profit Mozilla Foundation, has almost doubled in the past three months to 4.95 per cent of all internet users. Usage of Mozilla still trails Internet Explorer by a wide margin: the Microsoft browser built into the Windows operating system was used by 90.3 per cent of web users, the research firm said. But is share is down nearly three percentage points since October, when Firefox was released.

> If its only grown half a point or so in the next month and a half it won't get far.

With Microsoft neglecting IE until Longhorn, Firefox will continue to eat away IE's market share. While Firefox won't make a serious dent (although I can easily see it capturing around 10% of the market before Longhorn comes out), but it's been 3.5 years since IE was significantly updated. In tech world, 3.5 years is an eternity. I know many grandmas still use Windows 98, but most ActiveWin visitors probably relish using the latest and greatest. And IE 6 isn't it.

That said, Firefox is far from perfect, particularly in terms of compatibility and memory leak issues.

Parkker, why are you so anxious for Firefox to fail? Every Firefox story, you swoop in to dump on it like you have some vested interest. I doubt very much that Firefox is going away. MS can't pull their "abuse our monopoly" trick this time around like back in the good old Netscape days. Besides, while MS works furiously behind the scenes to thwart every possible competitor, they publicly spew stuff they don't really support about how choice is good for the consumer (yeah yeah, I know - so long as the consumer chooses Microsoft). Certainly that includes web browsers too.

Wow! Its everywhere I tell you, everywhere! Nothing to see here folks. Just another BS firefox story. You can move on now.

If you look at WebSideStory's press release page, there is nothing on it regarding new numbers and Firefox. There are news items that mention WebSideStory's story, but that is all.

This is like the "story" of Munich going *nix. It got past around so many times by so many "news" orgainizations that hoped it would be true that it become a joke. At present, Munich is still "studying" the so-called transition to *nix - its been nearly two years since the initial announcement! lol

Heck, even this month's issue of PC World featured Firefox as a lead story and all about how wonderful it was - of course, not mentioning any of the downsides like the security problems it already has or not rendering pages correctly. No, we wouldn't want to upset the Firefox party goers now would we?

"If its only grown half a point or so in the next month and a half it won't get far."

Oh really?

"The U.S. adoption rate of Firefox, the upstart Mozilla-based browser that has become the champion of the open source movement, has nearly tripled over the past month, according to the latest independent study from WebSideStory" http://www.statmarket.com/

nearly tripled in the past month (Jan 12 2005)

"It's taking chunks of share from Microsoft in the Internet browsing market. According to a survey released Jan. 12 by Web site analytics firm WebSideStory, Mozilla's free Firefox browser has grabbed a 4.6% share over the past six months and seems well on the way to its stated goal of 10%. " http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/jan2005/tc20050112_0827_tc119.htm

If your predictions are as accurate as your perception of current reality then good luck Parkker.

#5 By 3339 (64.160.58.137) at 1/19/2005 6:27:34 PM
Parkker, it would really help if you understand basic math:

4.6% is 15% growth from 4%

5.3% is 15% growth from 4.6%

6.1% is 15% growth from 5.3%

7% is 15% growth from 6.1%

8.1% is 15% growth from 7%

9.3% is 15% growth from 8.1%

10.7% is 15% growth from 9.3%

...

I don't know why you think .5% of the browser market is negligible growth... It's quite enormous, actually, for one month.

But, further, if the growth rate remained consistent, FireFox would be growing at greater than 1% per month in just 5 months and would be at 10% marketshare in just 6 months.

Anyone who knows me knows that I rarely bash on MS, but I have to take the time to do it now.

IE has to be one of the worst current products MSFT has. Before the Internet turned bad, IE was great, but it was just waiting for malicious people to start attacking it.

The MSFT IE team seems clueless about what's going on. On the IE team blog, they seemed oblivious to the headache they're causing the majority of Internet users with their crappy, buggy, unsecure browser. IE is a disaster and an embarassment to microsoft.

If they owned up and said they're working on making it better, I'd be cool with that, but instead they argue that it's great and anything bad sad about it is just badwill towards MSFT.

Firefox is an AMAZING browser. The fact that can render 0.1% of the horribly crappy HTML that's written out there is a testament to human ingenuity.

I only use Firefox now. Code that doesn't render in Firefox these days isn't worthy of being called HTML. Old mozilla browsers were pretty poor, but Firefox will render just about anything these days except the worst of the worst.

Moving everyone to firefox, however, will not solve the Internet security problems facing the web, it will only delay it. Only getting rid of the whole browser mentality and severing the cancer that is DHTML will solve the problem. Going to a more structured layout/templating system using XML should be the direct we should be heading.

MS doesn't seem to "get it" in this regard. IE7 doesn't sound like its going to be any better than IE6. Unless they're going to completely rewrite IE in fully managed code, IE7 will just be a bandaid on a scab on a deep wound and not a real solution.

Anyone recently supported a healthcare provider? A major protal used by many for billing cannot use IE under Windws XP SP2 because it is "too secure" and not even in a trusted zone, will it allow the use of a messaging client needed. The answer was to either remove XP SP2, or use an alternative browser - Firefox.

At first blush - it looks bad on and for SP2 and IE and good for Firefox.

I don't agree and neither does the client. At first blush....bad SP2, bad, bad, bad.... - Wrong!

It comes down to <AGAIN> how COM Clients are managed in IE with SP2 and how they are not managed as well by other browsers. Oh yeah, without question, "BAD PEOPLE" did bad things with the ability to present properly signed code within a COM Client that could and did injur people using IE without SP2; however, SP2 did address that and very well and it remains wide open in other browsers.

I'll resist naming the COM Client, because far too many people are underinformed about it and all COM Clients and how they work with a browser to deliver a very wide range of enhanced online experiences - good and bad ones.

What one might attempt to stress is that IE has been advanced and developed on a continuous basis. SP2 included a tremendous amount of work that centered on security and privacy only and not features. IE has either natively, or via third parties building on it, about anything one might want - including tabbed browsing, which I and many simply do not like - Task Bar ALT -TAB, duh... So, IE's development of late has been transparent in most cases, but that does not mean it hasn't been substantive.

#11 has some good points and extensible templates will dominate - along with COM+ and an entirely different type of online experience using a web client as a starting point.

"If the best you can do with all the free publicity Firefox got (especially considering how uncritical it was) is a trivial .5% over 45 days then Firefox is just another Opera."

Again, I don't see how you can see that market loss as trivial. If Windows lost marketshare at that pace, it would be astounding. Less so for IE, but it is still real and dramatic.

"It won't. Do try and remember 97% of new PC's end up with Windows and IE on them. That works out to be something like 12 million new Windows/IE PC's a month."

But not necessarily, in fact most likely NOT, new users. And, don't you see the connection to this:

"I also take solace in the thought that 97% or more the people who do use Firefox are using it on Windows."

What solace is there in that? Linux and Mac OS X users have secure and better options. It IS Windows users that are leaving IE. All those machines with Windows are NOT 12 million new IE users.

#9 By 3339 (64.160.58.137) at 1/20/2005 5:20:21 PM
"Whats the big deal about people trying out new browsers on Windows. "

You seem to be the one with the problem with it.

'In fact, the amusing thing about this is that it will remove the perceived need to use Linux or OS X to surf the web securely."

You've got very delusional ideas in your head, Parkker. No one I know thinks an OS change is necessary for a secure browser. The true perceptions are: people think IE is insecure, which it is. And they are switching. There is another perception that the OS is insecure, which it is, and some are switching. I know no one who has ever suggested that the browser is insecure, therefore, switching OSes solves that one problem. But then again I've never visited ParkkerWorld.

I run Linux, Unix, windows all, SUN this and that, HP-AIX, and MAC OS 8, 9, 10 - what's on your PC. Security is in the users hand. I can count on one hand the number of times I obtain a virus, someone has broken in one of my systems (Windows systems do like to stop working for no reason time to time) or any type of security issue. I wear my seat belt when I drive. I have watch people having problems with an auto-open gate. Some people are not ready for the 21st Century. I hope flying cars aren't coming soon.
