Can the Mac Do Without Microsoft Office? | |

Opinion: Having Microsoft Office available on Mac OS gives Apple needed credibility with customers. But it also gives Microsoft the ability to suddenly pull the plug if it ever so decides. Can the Macintosh survive without Microsoft Office? It's a question that has followed Steve Jobs since his return to Cupertino in 1996. At the time, Apple was in deep financial trouble, and a bailout from Microsoft—of all people—got the company back on its feet. The concern isn't that the typical Macintosh "consumer" customer requires MS Office for digital photography or their iPod. | ||

nope, not much and certainly not for long...
What a sad platform - so much promise and so much BS. Darwin? huge mistake - they'd have been better off with a purely commercial Unices and charging a lot more for the OS with free updates. Such great case designs, too, but also dumb... way too costly to produce. They need to port the OS to x86 and let it emerge as a decent Lincues like distro. |

| Mac Office will survive just fine. It is one of Microsoft's most profitable software packages. To discontinue it over a grudge would financially harm their shareholders, something even MS wouldn't do. |

I think the Mac can do well without Office. If they go the route of OpenOffice.org, they'll be better off. There's no reason to reinvent the wheel when all the work has been done for you.
Of all the open source projects, OO is probably the best. |

| With file compatibility, Mac needs MS Office, as does anyone/everyone else. |

I thought I remembered reading that an average mac user spends as much on MSFT software as the average pc user. Anyone else remember a study to that end?
I can believe it, as the MSFT software is a bit higher for the mac. I guess they have to overcome the sheer lack of mac users. |
