One event widely reported last week was the failure of Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 to function when Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect, Bill Gates, tried to initiate a slideshow of photos just taken by Late Night host, Conan O'Brien.
Though media reports suggested the Media Center 2005 PC that Gates was using had "frozen" or "crashed", a post on the AV Science Forum by Jay P. Kapur, Lead Program Manager of the Windows Media Center TV Team, suggests this was not the case. Gates was also not given the wrong remote, as Gates had commented during the demonstration.

If the hardware was bad why didn't they use one of the backup systems? If there were no backup PC’s why else would Bill Gates comment about having the wrong remote?

No matter. Media PC Sales have doubled over last years sales and are still growing.

We use one everyday - updated twice from the original to 2004 and then to 2005 [HP] and few modest upgrades - more memory, Gig NIC for the wired network. It's now connected to two extenders - one XBox and one Linksys MCX - it's been solid as a rock and never goes down and is the most used PC within our family. An MCX is running with it in now on a Samsung HLP5063W 50 Inch DLP. As hammered as this thing is, I doubt very seriously that the PC crashed in a simple demo. I just have not seen the MCE wobble at all and as I said, we hammer it constantly.

#5 IMO it was obvious that as soon as you could buy the OS through different channels and not only with a new computer sales would have surged. Too bad that took so long to MS to realize or accept it. I finally bought it too.

bob, don't be so obvious in your non-reading of the article... it was a failure of an IR reciever, not a PC.

Fritzly, they were talking about actual MCE PC sales, not sales of MCE OEM CD's (which MS isn't selling to the public)

Oh I see. Where did you get the data broken down between MCE PCs and OSes bundled with some hardware? I couldn't find it anywhere.

"Where did you get the data broken down between MCE PCs and OSes bundled with some hardware?"
Huh? What part of Bill Gates stating that they have 1.4 million sales of MCE PCs isn't understandable?

True Hal. And their are 90,000 Ford F-Series pickups sold on a good day, where there is only about 100 hot air balloon baskets produced each year.

Hal, your comparison as far as "miniscule" goes is fine. The rest is pretty much all apples and oranges.
But again, MCE is in it's infancy really. And it has DOUBLED in sales this past year. It's also well know that it is becoming more and more popular as is all digital media.
And look at the newest connection they have, TIVO. I think they are making great inroads, and the latest version has proven to be very stable and popular.
Let's try not to compare $1800 PC's to free OPEN SOURCE browsers in the future though.

#18 Hal, they really mean it when they say alcohol and cough syrup do not mix...
I mean it's got to be something, Sir... ....but it has yet to catch on with the masses...
I don't get your post at all. Given the sheer number of us masses that MS seems to have worked for I just can't see your point.
I try really hard not to post in personal ways, but in your post and in this case, I am grateful that you're likely in front of a PC right now and not behind the wheel of a motor vehicle of some sort....
MCE is super simple to use. I watch all the time as people who have never even seen it, "assume" it is part of our television signal provider's offering - they ask, "hey whose your sat, or cable company, I want this...?"
MCE 2005 is definately catching on and getting better each day - MS has simple design tool online for them that builds a parts list and visually walks people through a set up.
With IPTV in Bellsouth now, and moving in all other areas, MCE/MCX and DRM WMDVD are going to do very well. Mixing online content with the PC is so amazing - my kids just dig that stuff and their pals do, too. Please borrow one for a few weeks and see what we are all talking about.
