Microsoft has made significant inroads with the latest version of its Windows Media Center, but the entertainment-oriented software has yet to find a permanent seat in the living room. After selling just a million copies in its first two years, the latest version--Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005--has racked up 400,000 sales since it debuted in October, Microsoft said at the CES trade show Wednesday. | ||

Sorry deadest, but MCE doesn't work with only specific hardware. It works with "recommended" hardware that they have tested it with, and that list is growing. However, I have two systems now running MCE that don't have ANY of the recommended hardware and it works great.
Next time research before you spew out inaccuracies. |

Brian - You expect WAY too much from this crowd. ;-) I've been trying forever to convey that sentiment... unfortunately, many will never get it. Small OEM's and FSP's <the little toasters that could like my small company> have made use of the extensive tools provided by MS to build custom MCE's.
Their documentation should have been read by the guy who wrote this....sad that it was not. A year of testing and product submissions reveals a really huge list of supported products. and BTW - the clown who wrote this new anything at all - he'd know that not even the remote is required to conform to MCE specs. It and even the tuner are all optional. The WHQL and build-guides are just awesome and with some practice, good design and manufacturing techniques, one can builf for even the smallest of niches - very high-end, or kids' room units at the low end that are just a blast to build and own. The "WOW" factor is very high....case in point" even per-snicikty generic Sony media is read in an instant and with some work, one can produce way cool icons that look exactly like the different media types - making Windows Explorer easy for non-tech people, kids and older people less familiar with PC's and drive icons. For builders and integration guys, MCE is a breath of very fresh air - people who can't find a magic gate driver for a Sony, just hate TiVo and MCE is so easy. I just can't say enough good about this product - it is really that much fun. |
