A Miami teenager has created a free web browser that has been called Bill Gates's worst nightmare A MIAMI teenager is basking in the glory of helping to create a new internet browser at 17 that is now challenging the grip of Microsoft, which once held a virtual monopoly on web surfing. Computer analysts say that Blake Ross’s browser, Firefox, is a faster, more versatile program that also offers better protection from viruses and unwanted advertising. Not only that, the system is offered free over the internet and its codes and technology are all accessible as an “open source” programme. Firefox has already been downloaded by an estimated 15 million users since its launch in November, making it the world’s second-most-popular browser. | ||

| Certainly is miles better than IE is currently. Let's hope Firefox does push Microsoft into doing something more with IE as competition even in its smallest form is good. It's the first time I've had another default browser on my PC for years. |

| I'm finding some parts a little clunky yeah, but far from slow (maybe one second slower at it's first load than IE). |

Firefox can't hold a candle to IE when it comes to manageability in a corporate environment, flat out.
There's also nothing in Firefox even resembling IE's security zones. Firefox has 3, exactly 3, things better than vanilla IE... tabs (and not everyone likes tabbed browsing, why not just use the taskbar?), pipelining (which only works if it is supported on the server), and standards support. |

| CPUGuy: there is one thing Firefox does better than IE that you forgot to mention. It actually blocks ActiveWin's popups. |

Is the reason Microsoft's losing browser market share because of new features in Firefox? Tabbed browsing, popup blocking and better standards compliance are nice, but I don't believe they go to the heart of the real reason people are switching; security.
Real or perceived, IE has security PR problems that no added interface feature can fix. Microsoft needs to convince users that IE is secure and the only way to do that is to stop the weekly announcements of new exploits(or make the competition look worse). Until then users will look for alternatives. |

Firefox is good. IE is better over all
I've been trying firefox out over the last 6 weeks. I find it slower (quite noticibly so) then IE both in startup (bigtime), and browsing(more minor) I find it lacks many features I use. (diffent proxy settings for different connection situations,just one example) I find it's popup blocking, extemely good, in fact it's about the only reason I still use it... specificly to check spammy sites.. *cough* activewin is one of them.. Generally it's a decent 1.0 basic browser that works well enough, and has great popup blocking abilities. However while it may compete with IE.. it does not compare. I have not spent alot of time with XPsp2.. since I refuse to run XP for my own workstation so My comparisons are with ie 6.0 (with some rollup patches) on win2k3 advanced server. |

| Or you can just use IE with sp2 and turn on the built-in pop-up blocker. |

| I use IE 3.x in compatibility mode on Windows XP SP2. |
