Microsoft's Feature-Cutting Strategy For R2, Longhorn Raises Concern | |

As it preps two Windows server updates for 2005, Microsoft is struggling to find the right balance between making--and delivering on--promises made to customers during their Software Assurance contract periods. In the past six months, Microsoft, Redmond, Wash., has found itself in the awkward position of acknowledging that the long-promised WinFS next-generation file system would have to be cut from the Longhorn upgrade of Windows to guarantee its on-time delivery in 2006. More recently, Microsoft executives confessed that two key features, Network Access Protection and integrated Digital Rights Management Services, which were supposed to appear in its interim R2 Windows Server 2003 update, will not make it into the 2005 server update after all. | ||

| I think that MS should just hold back Longhorn until they finish with all of the code... and leave in the WinFS. Why would they want to sell a half completed software. Haven't they learned from their past mistakes. I would like to see a full relase of the new Windows System with all the bells and whistles. Even if it takes a little bit longer to relase a finial copy of the OS. |

Getting sick of this.. They should just wrapup what they have done today for win2k3+ and XP tweeks; ip6\wireless\san support\nap stacks, other addon products wrapped in.. call it windows2006 and ship a unified server\pro\home release. Then get back to work on thier real longhorn vision for the 2010 timeframe.

| XP Reloaded wasn't really a new OS, it was just SP2, Windows Media Player 10 and a few other things that were released all around the same time that kind of refreshed Windows XP. |

| At one point Longhorn was just going to be a small upgade between Whistler and Blackcomb. In some ways it seems to me that it is what it is once again becoming. |

They called it Windows XP Media Center 2005 instead. |

tgnb, Media Center 2005 is part of Reloaded... according to Paul T:
"Windows XP Reloaded is the code name for a marketing campaign designed to rejuvenate consumer excitement about Windows XP, a product that has evolved dramatically since its initial release in October 2001. Set to run from September to December 2004, XP Reloaded will concentrate on new XP versions such as XP Media Center Edition (XP MCE) 2005 and XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, as well as various XP product updates, including XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), and add-on products such as Portable Media Centers and Windows Media Center Extenders. Some of these products became available on September 2, 2004 and October 12, 2004. Others will ship later this fall." |

| Looks like Reloaded is here and has been here for a couple months. The next OS release is a ways off yet though. I guess SP3 is the only thing left before Longhorn. |
