Millions of U.S. dollars were flowing to relief agencies around the world to supply food, water, shelter and health care to the region. Tens of thousands of people were killed in the disaster that struck a dozen countries from Thailand to Somalia. Countless thousands more were injured and displaced.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged $3-million (U.S.) and Amazon.com has raised more than $3.5-million in on-line donations to aid South Asian countries devastated by tsunamis.

My house had a leak in the roof when it rained recently, can I get some money too?

Every bit helps that is for sure. My wife and I were running some errands this afternoon and donated $100 at our American Red Cross to send over there. I know it's not much, but that's all we can afford after the holidays :(

#3 Like you said, every bit helps! And there's a lot of work to do over there. I applaud everyone that chips in for things like this.
What's a little sad is that the US knew about the Tsunami, but didn't have a set of procedures to follow of who to contact with that information: http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/2004-12-28-tsunami_warning_usat_x.htm. They sent out emails, but in such events you cannot rely on emails to be delivered and read in time, you need to know who to call. Although as the story mentions, unless the resorts had evacuation plans in place, such notice may still have done no good.
Going forward, it's good to see that the Tsunami Warning System for the Indian Ocean can now actually be acted on and active within a year: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000087&sid=a_P_.qIaXuMQ&refer=top_world_news

#5 From your own link: "sent an alert to 26 countries, including Thailand and Indonesia, but struggled to reach the right people."
What good is sending emails in the event of a Tsunami? What good are those alerts if they don't reach the right people? If the set of procedures aren't good enough, it's no different to not having a proper set of procedures to begin with.
#9 "Of course that automatically makes in the fault of the US that the Indian Ocean countries didn't have Tsunami warning systems. Or were members of the ITSU."
I wasn't blaming the US, there has been a push to get a Tsunami Warning System in the Indian Ocean for the last 15 years but it's hasn't gotten anywhere due to political etc reasons. I just said that it's a little sad that the US knew about this several hours before the disaster. It's too late now, but if they knew the right people to contact (i.e. proper set of procedures), we might have been able to save a lot of lives.

#11 "Really?"
Yes, really, and if you had reading and comprehension skills higher than your President you'd be able to understand that. That's why I said that it was a little sad that the US knew, but added that without proper evacuation plans it probably wouldn't have done much good anyway. And then I added a link to a story showing that at least now, after 15 years of trying, there is going to be a Tsunami Warning System set up for the Indian Ocean.
Everyone with reading and comprehension skills of at least a 4 year old understood that. Your patriotism is blinding you, get a grip.

#14 Like I have said many times now, go back to school. I'm not blaming the US for an act of nature, I mearly mentioned that they did know about it. If other countries knew about it as well, then it's all the more sad that better warnings weren't sent out. Your patriotism is blinding you, get a grip.
Now if you took a look at the Tsunami Warning message that you were so keen to provide us with you'd find:
Tsunami Bulletin Number 001
THIS MESSAGE IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY. THERE IS NO TSUNAMI WARNING OR WATCH IN EFFECT.
NO DESTRUCTIVE TSUNAMI THREAT EXISTS BASED ON HISTORICAL EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI DATA.
Tsunami Bulletin Number 002
THIS MESSAGE IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY. THERE IS NO TSUNAMI WARNING OR WATCH IN EFFECT.
THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY OF A TSUNAMI NEAR THE EPICENTER.
Tsunami Bulletin Number 003
THIS MESSAGE IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY. THERE IS NO TSUNAMI WARNING OR WATCH IN EFFECT.
SOME ENERGY FROM YESTERDAYS TSUNAMI IN THE INDIAN OCEAN HAS LEAKED INTO THE PACIFIC BASIN.
It's a good thing all those messages were for information only! Although I'm a little confused, why do all the warnings mention no Tsunami Warning or watch in effect, even though later on in the second warning they mention the possibility?

#18 "George Bush prefers action to news conferences"
Finally something we can all agree on!
1333 American Casualties (http://icasualties.org/oif/)
151 Coalition Casualties (http://icasualties.org/oif/)
15038 - 17240 Iraqi Civilian Casualties (http://www.iraqbodycount.net/)
0 Weapons of Mass Destruction Found
With statistics like that, it's a little suprising that the majority of the World and half of Americans are against Bush's actions!
