"The Windows platform is not just insecure - it's patently, blatantly, and unashamedly insecure by design" As a Linux desktop user himself, system administrator Chris Spencer did not relish having to clean up his wife's infected Windows PC after it had become compromised. By the time he'd solved the immediate problem, Spencer had become so fed up with spyware, trojans, viruses, and spam, that he decided it was time to write a letter to the world. It's a simple message: it's time to switch from Windows to Linux. "The letter serves as a guide," Spencer explains, "taking you through some of the history of Microsoft right up to this present day."

You'd think, if he were a system administrator, he would have set up his wife with a limited user account. Having your non-computer-savvy wife running as an administrator is "patently insecure."
NT is absolutely not insecure by design. Win9x, yes, but not NT. It was designed from the ground up with security in mind. Of course, MS deserves criticism for making everyone an administrator by default, but to say the platform is inherently insecure is not true. |

| I would beg to differ. Windows NT (Server 2003) is VERY secure. |

Good grief! They need to change the name of this site in a huge way - ActiveLin or something... I see so many lame articles out here - all the sites, Neowin, etc... all drumming the same beat. The scientific truth be known, the OS'es out here are so much more alike than they are different and each of them becoming more and more like Windows NT 5. What will they do post Longhorn? The first real departure from an all too similar pattern. Put X-Services in Kernel mode in any Linuces and it would be difficult to distinguish it from XP <functionally> - they're both monolithic operating systems... Does anyone really get into them any deeper than what is typed out in these articles? I had a great side by side review of each from an engineering perspective. I'll dig it out and drop the link into a thread here when I can find it. It's been some time since I've gotten so weary of these kinds of articles. that I felt it necessary to simply share what the creators themselves have published. The guy who wrote the subject article is just nutty - *nix has been fully root-able for decades and many a career has been made doing just that. If one only knew... As a managed system, Windows is far more evolved and can actually be managed. It is both more difficult and presently more costly to provide the same for any *nix MS is to be commended - they provide for that and Longhorn is simply going to finally change computing for the first time in a very long time. May be it is just fun to post back and forth... I hope that is the case and no one takes any of these articles seriously. They're just sad. There is a couple of bright spots....MCE 2005, Tablet PC and Project PC...notable super-sets that do great things for their intended user types. |
