It used to be said that IBM’s Lotus Domino/Notes was an application platform that happened to provide e-mail, while Microsoft Exchange was an e-mail platform that was trying to become an application platform. However, since the release of Exchange Server 2000, that perception has been changing, say industry observers. “The gap's narrowed, and both [Exchange and Domino/Notes] are truly application platforms that also do e-mail and collaboration," says Don Montgomery, director of product marketing for United Messaging, Inc., of West Chester, Pa., which provides outsourced messaging and collaboration services to large companies. | ||

| Weak security? I haven't heard about any Exchange servers being hacked lately. Where are your sources that Exchange has weak security. Not opinions, just the facts. |

Actually if you want weak security, deploy sendmail on a Unix system. :)

Since exchange 5.0 I've yet to find a single person who would ever install notes again to run a corporate email system.
It's just horrid as an email server... does it run, sure, most of the time. Exchange\outlook's benifits far exceed notes when it comes to the functions of an email system. When you look at it from a collaborative standpoint, yes notes has had more capabilities for a longer period of time, however exch2k really does deliver if you know what your doing.. btw i've talked to some notes people as well, they say they'd much rather develope for exchange cause the programming model is easyier, they admit that notes may still have a few more interesting functions, but it's nothing they can't do without. hey just my 2cents. But as far as production 24x7 problemless email servers... they dont even compair. |

| #9 I think of an email server quite similarly to a database server (as does Larry Ellison, ;) ). If you would build applications on top of SQL Server, why not also on top of Exchange server. Also, since you can use outlook clients to GroupWise servers, GroupWise can just as easily propogate virii. |
