Microsoft says IE updates possible | |

Microsoft, under pressure to add new features to Internet Explorer, said it might do so by way of the browser's add-on mechanism. The company has been steadfast in its insistence that it won't issue a new standalone IE, which saw its last major upgrade in August 2001. After sustaining a series of security crises with IE, Microsoft issued a major upgrade with the Windows XP Service Pack 2. But that IE update is available only to people who use Windows XP--about half the Windows world. | ||

| I really do not understand the foolishness of Microsoft. For some unknown reason they do not understand that having a homogeneous browser accross their various new and older operating systems is CRITICAL to the web developer that is targeting that platform. If Microsoft continues to take the approach that they will not provide a seperate update of their new browsers for their other operating system, then I would have to say that their browser platform will quickly die. This will be good for Mozilla. Given Microsoft's previously demonstrated knowledge of the developer mindset, I really wonder how they came to make this tragic decision. An example is that if they deliver IE 7 with the next client OS and do not provide an update on Windows 2000/2003/XP, then a web developer will not be able to take advantage of the new capabilities of the new browser because many users will be using the older versions. The approach that Microsoft took with IE 6 is an approach that worked; it is available accross all of their reasonably current operating systems. I really do not understand their ludicrous approach. |

By 2006, Longhorn will probably be at least 12 months away from release. Even Ballmer concedes that it will be December 31, 2006. It will have 0% marketshare. As for XP, the problem is IE SP2 is not enough so we aren't talking about IE being good enough now or in 2 years. |

Parkker, with that comment you made me fall to the floor laughing the second time today. The first time was when i read your comment about deleting emails over in the other thread. It really exemplifies your limited knowlege about the industry you supposedly work in. |

How does that change the fact that Ballmer, at his most optimistic, is now predicting December 31st, 2006? "And, many will be running Longhorn in production from RC1/RC2 on, as I did with Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Certainly Microsoft itself will convert to Longorn by RC1 or RC2." Anyone doing so is a complete fool. Which explains why you were with 2000 and XP. "By 2006, XP and Longhorn will have 75% of the installed base of operating systems. " No, it won't. Longhorn still won't exist. "IE on XP SP2 is just fine for most people." No, it's not. 50% of them don't even have XP. Nevermind is it adequate. "Whiners like you, clinging to a dying OS, are bitter at all the mistakes Apple have made over the years resulting in sub 1.5% market share for Apple." No, I'm perfectly happy with Safari and Firefox. "Look, people can get a Media Centre PC from Dell or Gateway for less than 899$ as of today. Or they can buy $349 Dell's. Why whine about Win98? Upgrade." Look, what does that have to do with no IE updates? Nothing. Who's whining? You are the one ignoring the fact that many people still are using older OSes because they have to or they serve them well enough. "Do yourself a favor. For the price of an iPod you can have a brand new PC with monitor and XP Home with SP2." Why would buying something I have no use for be doing myself a favor? |
