a question for those in the know about all matter of computer GPU trivia.
how in the sam heck does the NVIDIA numbering convention work? what for instance does the first number mean in terms of version and then what about the second number. which is to say is the fact that these drivers are 67.xx substantially different than the 66.xx drivers i am currently running? |

It's really a build number.
The current drivers I have installed are 6.14.10.6693 (6693 being the build number). These drivers are build 6702. IIRC, the major version number (i.e., the 6 in 6.14.10.xxxx) is incremented whenever support is added for a new generation GPU. At some point the build number was treated as a version number likely because there are many new driver builds for each release series, and it's easier to remember v.6702 than v.6.14.10.6702, etc., when referencing a driver set. Check page 32 of the release notes for a driver history. The release notes also give greater details about changes in each version. |

Actually, the major version number is defined by Microsoft, specifically WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs). Any display driver submitted to Microsoft for the "Designed for Windows" logo program must use the following version structure:
X.yy.zz.xxxx, where "X" is the target Windows OS (4 = Win9x/ME, 5=Win2000, 6=WinXP/Svr03) "yy" is the DirectX version (10=DX5, 11=DX6, 12=DX7, 13=DX8, 14=DX9) "zz" has never been clearly defined by MS, but 01 was used for all Win9x/Win2000 drivers and then they changed it to 10 for WinXP and Server03. "xxxx" is the official driver build number recognized by Microsoft. Some vendors only use this number (like nVidia, at least publicly), while others (like ATI and S3) also use their own version numbers in addition to the WHQL number. |
