Microsoft could learn a lot from Apple's iPod | |

"As widely rumored, today, Apple released an iPod with color screen that synchronizes digital images as well as music. It's called simply: iPod Photo," Joe Wilcox writes for Microsoft Monitor. "I think Microsoft and some of its competitors could learn some lessons from Apple’s approach to the new product, most importantly from the name and broader marketing. I've harped on Microsoft nomenclature before. In the world of overly complex product names, Microsoft is only second to some of its partners. Take Small Business Server 2003, already windy enough, that recently got new name Windows Small Business Server 2003. Somehow the shorthand SBS 2003 was palatable. What now, WSBS 2003? I'm sure those are the call letters to a radio station somewhere in America." | ||

| Can't disagree with the article that Microsoft has horrible naming so you criticize the article and make up some ludicrous logic that if the author is focusing on the naming issue, than the author must believe the product is flawless in every other way. Come on, Brian, get a life. |

Captain Digital, it sounds as if you think the two are exclusive, or at least, you cannot be good at both: they are not. Naming is a simple element of branding and marketing. Microsoft could quite easily be good at this and they could still produce the same products. You clearly suggest this at the end, but I don't see why it's necessary to point out that they are separate things; yes, they are... so why does Microsoft completely fail at one thing and focus on the other when the branding DOES have an affect. And Apple conversely does not solely market well; they also produce good, logical products.
soda, is that your best rebuttal: yes, I think everyone would say the OS name is a good name. You can say Mac OS, you can say OS Ten, you can say OS "Exx", you can say Panther or Jaguar, and everyone will know exactly what you are talking about... even the many who have never used or even played with it.
