oh boy.... looks like it's time to drop some serious cash on a new machine.
My IBM T42P laptop (60GB HD, 1GB ram, 128MB Fire GL 2, 15.4" screen, 1.8 Ghz Pentium M) is great for development and most other tasks... but I need to game. My new machine will probably be an Athlon FX-55, 2 GB ram, 148GB RAID 0 SATA, dual Geforce 6800 Ultras via PCI Express, etc. Gonna try and build the beast for about $3000. Should last me at least 3 years for gaming... maybe a bit more. (My 1.2 Ghz Athlon machine is finally out of juice... about 3.5 years after I built it.) Yum... |

two things preventing me from looking at the upgrade right now. (well 3 if you count money)
Built in Dually support in the chips in 2k5. Wireless USB and Wireless firewire support in 2k6. but ahh well it doesn't hurt to look. I would probably do somethingnow if I had the money myself. el |

| #4: you can always get the new nForce 4 board but start out with a socket 939 Athlon 64 3000+ to keep things cost effective. The socket 939 3000+ is only $230 while an Athlon 64 4000+ (same as the FX-53) runs $750 and the FX-55 will be $100 more. At least that's my plan. |

Agreed you can go that way. although some of the test run are already overloading on the 3000+ especially if you are going with a sli based system.
Personally I think I will still wait for the dually chip although it sounds like it wll be the new FX chip at the desktop level when it is released. el |

#1 - The big ones are obviously Half Life 2 (+ CS), Doom 3, and Far Cry. But I'd also love to finish Homeworld 2, which I can't beat because the last level is simply too slow for me to be able to compete with the AI.
I'm a big FPS guy... with Q1 being my favorite game ever. Oh, and THE RED SOX WON!!!! WE'RE GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES!!!! GO SOX!!!! (Boston is insane right now... choppers over head trying to spot riots, non-stop beeping from cars, and there must be a crowd of 100,000 gathering downtown... and it's almost 2am!) |
