LAS VEGAS--Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison is gunning for Microsoft once again, this time with a new strategy aimed at the giant's commanding lead in e-mail software. At a press conference Monday, Ellison derided Microsoft's Exchange e-mail servers as unreliable and insecure. He said Oracle is offering an e-mail server option for its 9i database management software along with a migration program to move companies from Exchange to Oracle's database. | ||

| Somewhat ironic that the very next article to be posted on ActiveWin after Ellison's is SQL Server 2000 beating a new benchmark. Ellison is a great CEO, I think, but I don't think I trust a thing he says. |

This is the same guy that moves to a small town where there's an airport there, lands his jet in the wee-hours of the morning, the town complains, then he threatens to sue the town for noise abatement procedures that were in place 10 years before he got there. You don't get much bigger A-holes than Ellison... maybe McNealy. Unrelated, but my thoughts on the CEO who I consider to be one of the biggest pricks in the industry.

| When I've had the misfortunate of using an Oracle backend as opposed to SQL Server, I've used VisualStudio's tools to manipulate data, schemas, procs, etc. They work quite well. |

I was looking at the Oracle announcement:
http://www.oracle.com/features/9i/index.html?unbreakesvcs.html They make the claim they replaced 97 e-mail servers worldwide with a single Oracle 9i database. Didn't this increase their WAN traffic tremendously? It also doesn't mention if they were using Exchange 2000 or one of the older versions. Exchange 2000 is considerably faster and easier to manage than the previous versions. Given what I have seen of Oracle's training labs, I would imagine they finally migrated from Exchange 4.0. Which then raises a question of how reliable is this study when compared to modern solutions? |

Ellison is a moron. Few intelligent people take him seriously.
If Ellison and McNealy both spent as much time innovating and developing competing products as they do defining themselves through Microsoft's faults, we would have a much better off industry. This post was edited by RMD on Tuesday, November 13, 2001 at 20:21. |

Soda, I don't think the article even specified that Oracle used Exchange at all. Perhaps they used Notes or some other previously.
Oh, and about being "unbreakable", I've had Oracle 8i databases break on me more often then SQL Server 2000 databases. I'll second that RMD. |

My old company ran their whole enterprise (about 10,000) off 12 boxes. :-) |
