So according to Gartner, not only are Linux PC's a vehicle for pirating Windows... Windows XP Starter Edition (aka Crippled To Hell And Back Edition) is also "likely [to] increase software piracy." (http://news.com.com/Gartner+Steer+away+from+cheap+Windows+XP/2100-1016_3-5309139.html?tag=nl). Maybe after making that initial claim last month, certain parties felt that it would only be fair to claim Linux in increasing piracy, leading to this article this month.
I wonder what they'll claim next to increase piracy. I guess it depends who pays them to write up the report. |

| This is so common in Asia. Buy your PC with Linux on it and then down the alley to get a pirated copy of Windows XP for $2.50 and away you go. I would guess that it is closer to 95% of people that do it, nobody wants Linux there, they just save the MS liscensing fees. In most asian countries Windows XP is much cheaper than Linux distributions since the cost of the CD itself is the biggest factor. One CD is cheaper than 3 or 5. |

Microsoft will have to be very delicate with this situation.
Why? It is good publicity for them that nobody wants to use Linux even when it is free. I have been in a couple of countries in the Fareast and never saw a Linux box in an Internet cafe or a private home. China does force some government employees to use Red Flag Linux, and what a good combination. The GPL and the communists. |
