Microsoft to take direct shots at Linux rivals | |

Microsoft is refining its "Get the Facts" Linux attack, taking specific aim at Red Hat, Novell and IBM rather than the broader movement around the open-source operating system. The new phase tactic is based on the fact that the vast majority of Linux users buy their software from a company rather than downloading and assembling freely available products on their own, Martin Taylor, general manager of Microsoft's platform strategy, said in an interview Wednesday. For the effort, Microsoft will compare its own products with those of its competitors--for example, Red Hat's application server software for running Java software. | ||

Does anyone care?
I have been a user of both Linux, and Windows for who cares to remember and both are great and both have there cons. It's starting to get a little tiring of reading the same crap over and over about the cost wars on Linux, and now there going to say more people buy it rather than download it. There is nothing wrong with that it supports the programmers package builders and who ever else that works on the distrobution, and if we are talking about th desktop distrobution competing against Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP then it is still far cheaper 2 to 5 bucks for a CD from cheapbytes, or 30 to 90 for a boxed retail version from redhat, suse, mandrake whoever. and for that 90 bucks you get OpenOffice with most of the features you will find in MS Office (not all i know) you get a ton of media players a choice of desktops (kde/gnome/fvwm etc..) and all of this for a small price as compared to Windows you get an OS not much more, then buy Office, then some burner software... I just don't see how Linux is more expensive unless MS beleaves there software is really free and didn't notice the price tag on the box on the way to the store? blah blah blah enough is enough can we see something new from Redmond now? |

| The end for Linux is coming next year. The Linux experts themselves have discovered almost 500 patent violations in Linux. Just wait to the lawsuits start coming and people find they are liable for linux patent violations and not the comapnies(distributors) themselves. |

You know even if MS did decide to use some of the patents it may hold against open source Linux/Unix they will just be confirming the fact that they are a monopoly like evryone knows.
I think it would fall some where in Anti-competitive, and i just don't see Linux every really just going away even if a certain program can't be offered any longer or developers have to change they way things are done because MS will want some kick back for the patent they may hold on a feature. But when it comes to the rest why would i want to buy Windows XP/2000/2003 for a web server, ftp server, dhcp server, dns server, file server when i can download any distro from the internet for free and most of your package managed distros offer all of these. there are no fees per client access that you have to pay with MS for every seat that access your file server, i don't need a crappy buggy hacked once a week IIS server when i have apache, i don't need windows ftp server when i have a light weight vsftpd server that is much much much more secure than what MS offers i don't need all the bloat and telli tuby desktop for a server i should have to have a dual xeon 2.8 with 4gb of ram to run a mail server when i can do the same thing using open-exchange, qmail, postfix etc... on a machine less powerfull and will out perform ms exchange. i like MS's products don't get me wrong but it's just rediculous what they charge and the hardware required to do the same thing a linux box can do on lesser hardware... |

It's rediculous what redhat charges for commercial support too.
And lesser hardware? Hardware is cheap by comparison. It's the least of my costs. |

#3, Thats right. Those patent violations are form many and various companies, such as MS. They are already mounting their attack of course. It's going to be interesting to see how Linux is going to survive this, if it does survive. If they remove all the code that violates patents there wont be any Linux left.
#5, I dont see how pursuing patent violations makes you a monopoly. What a load of garbage. If someone copied your work and doesnt give you credit, and then also is a direct competitor to you, then what are you going to do?? Forget about it? I think not...... If you dont want to use Windows Server then dont. Don't be fooled into thinking that if you install a Linux box default with all those services you mentioned switched on, you are just as vulnerable to any remote attack/exploit as a default windows configuration. You will have literally hundreds of holes until you patch them all up, just like Windows. And when youve got nowhere else to turn, you will pay through the butt for support. And where are you applying your wonderful logic anyway? To the home? To the corporation? Do you know what it takes to shift to Linux in a massive organisation? Oh and if you know, can you tell me what benefits there would be? |
