Firefox browser to hit 1.0 milestone
Time: 00:49 EST/05:49 GMT | News Source: News.com | Posted By: Jonathan Tigner

Barring any last-minute surprises, the Firefox Web browser on Tuesday will turn 1.0.

Although the release is technically a preview, the 1.0 version is a significant milestone for the free open-source browser software, which has already won an enthusiastic following as an alternative to Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

"Today's builds are the new candidate 1.0PR (preview release) builds," Asa Dotzler, the Mozilla Foundation's community quality advocate, wrote in a Web log posting Saturday night. "If all goes well with these builds, they'll become the official Firefox 1.0 Preview Release builds on Tuesday morning."

Who cares about this stupid milestone. I HATE OPEN SORES SOFTWARE, TABBED BROWSING AND ALL THE OTHER STUPID HYPE ABOUT THIS VASTLY INFERIOR BROWSER.

Fred: Don't blame IE for your stupidity.

#4. You should stop downloading porn & warez.
#5. How can you hate tabbed browsing? It takes it to a whole other level.
#7. I'll take your advice.

Fred, try this browser http://www.maxthon.com/en/index.htm, or one of the other IE 'shells' (for want of a better term).
You get all of the advantages of the IE rendering engine, features that make firefox etc. look decidedly primitive, and the ability to disable the nasties like ActiveX & Scripts globally. Plus the latest version of Maxthon intergates with IE's new (SP2) download controls very well.

#11: Are you related to the 60 Minutes investigative team or, perhaps, Dan Rather?

Windows Update only works with IE and won't do anything more than display an HTML message stating such when accessed via Firefox.

Windows Update as accessed using Firefox 1.0PR (same result inearlier versions):

"Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer.

You need to be running a version of Internet Explorer 5 or higher in order to use Windows Update.

Download the latest version of Internet Explorer

Once Internet Explorer is installed, you can go to the Windows Update site by typing http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com into the address bar of Internet Explorer.

If you prefer to use a different Web browser, updates to Windows may be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center."

#16: I'm not a MS hater. I make my living using MS OSs, development tools, and SQL Server. But, Firefox is a superior product whether you are an advanced user or novice. It's default security settings are great for novices. It's tabbed browser and pop-up blocker are great for power browsers. Yes, I have configured IE to block all undesired pop-ups using changes to the settings for each security zone and modifications to the hosts file, but this was convoluted and beyond many normal users. Besides, so many sites make use of Javascript that makes consistent rendering a challenge without moving sites to other zones.

In the end, why bother with IE? Firefox handles these things effortlessly, renders just as fast (if not faster), and supports tabs without third party add-ons.

It's not about MS or anti-MS zealotry. Firefox is simply a better browser.

#6 By 13030 (198.22.121.120) at 9/15/2004 11:49:07 AM
#19: "Not too useful for WIndows users then ... "

Yeah, it's impossible to patch or update your Windows system without using the Windows Update. Whatever. Nothing like downloading and applying the patch (especially if you're a network admin using a deployment tool.)

#19: "Hmmm. Not on XP SP2 yet?"

Sorry, I don't upgrade every computer I own for the sake of upgrading. Also, since I license every piece of software on all of my computers it's not financially smart to always upgrade at every opportunity. My laptop uses XP SP2, I still prefer Firefox, although SP2 is a step (finally!) in the right direction.

#20: " Hey, guess what? TEN new vulnerabilities on Secunia for Firefox yesterday."

The vulnerabilities affect the previous beta versions of Firefox, not the just released 1.0PR version. Nagging little detail you forget to provide. Still, it's humorous to see someone triumphantly report on the vulnerabilities in a beta product.

#21: " Do you think it was sneaky to announce TEN vulnerabilities in Firefox on Microsoft Patch Day so most people don't notice them?"

Busy beaver noticed them. For such a Firefox hater, you seem very obsessed with tracking it's vulnerabilities and its market share.

#7 By 13030 (198.22.121.120) at 9/15/2004 1:37:57 PM
#23: "But nowhere near as humorous as someone touting a beta product full of security holes as a "better browser" when they aren't even running XP SP2 on most of their computers."

I didn't know that "running XP SP2 on most of [my] computers" was necessary to be able to judge the features, configurability, and usability of an application. One is not enough, I see. So, if I follow you, after I upgrade to Windows XP on my other computers running Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Pro I may be in better standing to form an opinion and make statements about Firefox because most my computers will be on XP SP2? I'll leave the machine running Windows Server 2003 as is. Is that ok, or should I downgrade it?

Why don't you address the fact that you failed to mention that the vulnerabilities in Firefox do not affect the current preview release? Why don't you address your infatuation with Firefox vulnerabilities and its market share? How about you give us feedback on your experience using Firefox and why you prefer IE?

#8 By 10896 (142.167.148.13) at 9/15/2004 2:52:39 PM
After releasing their much awaited preview release of Firefox 1.0, the Mozilla Foundation has issued a warning about 7 critical security issues with three of its flagship products.

How long have them known about them. Probably years like most of their critical security issues. Sure open sores really responds quickly to known security problems. Anybody using Mozilla, Firefox etc. is really gambling that amateur coders care about security or fixing anything. These programs are a joke and should be laughed out of the marketplace.

#9 By 13030 (198.22.121.120) at 9/15/2004 3:30:29 PM
#25: "They don't know for sure. Neither do I."

Ah, then you either assumed that they weren't fixed or chose to represent only the information that supports your position, since you didn't mention the fact that they had been reported, but not verified, as being fixed.

#25: "But it is important to publicize every security hole in Firefox in order to combat the spurious notion that Firefox is "safer" than IE. It isn't. The security holes are now being discovered in huge bunches because of the publicity over the summer."

I never said Firefox was safer.

#25: "security through obscurity only gets you somewhere if you stay obscure"

Only a fool would expect obsurity to secure their software.

Still waiting for you to answer two of the three questions: Why don't you address your infatuation with Firefox vulnerabilities and its market share? How about you give us feedback on your experience using Firefox and why you prefer IE?

#10 By 10896 (142.167.148.13) at 9/15/2004 4:24:47 PM
They might start by fixing the memory problems/leaks in Firebox and Mozilla. They have existed since the the beginning and are getting worse with every new version.
Meem Usage after attempting to use Firebox for about one hour. I cant use either Firebox or Mozilla even if I wanted to, because the memory leaks finally cause the computer to freeze up.

168,804 K and increasing

#26: "open sores"

Using that term probably won't boost your credibility...

#28: "168,804 K and increasing"

Hmmm... seems you have other problems with your system. I've had Firefox running for over a day with up to about 20 tabs showing. The Firefox host MDI has not been shut down since yesterday morning and now Firefox is using 48,564K of memory. IE, which I just started, showing the same web pages and is using 29,604K.

Based on my experience Firefox uses more memory when first starting but is not noticeably better or worse than IE during the workday.

#28: "168,804 K and increasing"

Hmmm... seems you have other problems with your system.

Wrong I have no other problems on either my personal or work computer except when I try to use Mozilla or Firebox. The identical high memory usage occurs which I have never seen with any other programs, many of which are known to be high users like Photoshop etc. This occcured when I first used Mozilla several years ago and continues to this day.

Why dont you go over to Slashdot if you want to be an open sores apologist.

#13 By 13030 (67.163.112.158) at 9/15/2004 8:41:15 PM
#31: "Why dont you go over to Slashdot if you want to be an open sores apologist."

Because the zealotry here is too entertaining. Go back and read my post #18 and you'll see that my living is made off of MS products. I am neither a MS nor open source zealot. I do hold MS to a high standard because of the talent, market share, and cash they retain. I also recognize the fact that others <gasp> occasionally do make superior software products--Firefox is one.

#14 By 13030 (67.163.112.158) at 9/15/2004 10:24:39 PM
#32: "It takes Firefox over 2 seconds to open it 2nd time around. It takes IE 6 on XP2 less the .25 seconds to open it 2nd time around. And I have a Dual Athlon 2800+ and 1GB of memory."

My feeling has always been that Firefox is faster, but I tried your imprecise, albiet entertaining, test on two of my computers using Firefox first, then IE.

PIII 1GHz, 512MB (Firefox 1.0PR, IE 5.01 SP2):
CNN.com: Firefox 4 sec., IE 4 sec.
CompUSA.com: Firefox 3 sec., IE 3 sec.
Amazon.com: Firefox 2 sec., IE 3 sec.
Handando.com: Firefox 1 sec., IE 2 sec.

Athlon 1500+, 768MB (Firefox 1.0PR, IE 6.0 XP SP2):

CNN.com: Firefox 5 sec., IE 4 sec.
CompUSA.com: Firefox 3 sec., IE 3 sec.
Amazon.com: Firefox 3 sec., IE 3 sec.
Handando.com: Firefox 2 sec., IE 2 sec.

Refreshing the page in each browser led to shaving about a second off of the load time for each site.

Interesting. Your comments would lead one to believe that on a slower system Firefox would be even noticeably slower, but that is not the case.

#15 By 10896 (24.25.182.11) at 9/15/2004 10:37:52 PM
You are stupid ch.
Help me solve the memory leak problem with Firebox and Mozilla.
I have at least 20 years experience with all kinds of operating systems and software.

Those two programs are among the worst I have ever seen.
They always say once the debugging code is removed that they will work with no memeory problems, I am still waiting after at least two years.

I take normal precautions, and never have had the slightest problem with IE and it works with every site.

Screw Firebox and Mozilla

#16 By 13030 (198.22.121.120) at 9/16/2004 10:28:08 AM
#35: "You are stupid ch."
#36: "Twit."

Classic. Should I expect "WTFPWNED" next or something more vulgar and disrespectful?

Also, I checked the loading of this discussion and the result for the initial page load in Firefox was 3 seconds versus 6 seconds for IE (Athlon XP 1.5 GHz, Windows Server 2003). Refreshing the page resulted in 3 seconds for each browser.

#17 By 13030 (198.22.121.120) at 9/17/2004 11:08:31 AM
#38: "I didn't say anything about refreshing the page did I? Twit."

I guess you're comfortable with your current level of disrespect. I have to question the role model you are setting for your kids--teach them that calling someone "twit" repeatedly in a discussion will foster intelligent debate or prove your point.

#18 By 13030 (198.22.121.120) at 9/17/2004 4:07:52 PM
#40: "Role model? Since when do I have to be a role model?"

You need not say any more... your value system is clear.

"And sometimes, when people are extra thick, calling them a name gets their attention."

You had my attention before and you know it. Calling someone a name in this forum is an act of desperation.
