Let me start out with a couple of my current complaints. My biggest annoyance with the current version is that it keeps reinstalling features, which requires me to reinsert the master disc over and over. I'm not sure if this is a trick to check with Microsoft's database to make sure I'm a registered user or if the program is just stupid.
Here's the scenario. I get a .doc file as an e-mail attachment. I click on it and Word boots. Then I'm told I need to add a feature to read the file. It's always the same feature, apparently. I say Yes to adding the feature. It installs it, then loads the file from the e-mail. The next time I click on the e-mail, the same thing happens, and so on. Obviously the feature is never actually added.

Well then, if Dvorak had problems then EVERYBODY must have these problems!
Down with Word!
What a moron.

Dvorak's complaints about Word simply reveal that he doesn't know how to use it, and that he can't be bothered to get someone more knowledgeable -- maybe one of his grandchildren? -- to help him resolve his problems.

Must be the user... he's a bozo... should've hired a techie to fix it... blah, blah, blah... You guys crack me up with your MS is perfect, users are fools attitude.
I always do full installations (I've used the full install option as well as custom, select all options). Yet, I've been prompted for install CDs for Office 2000, Visual Studio .NET, and MSDN Libraries for updates, patches, help lookups, etc. Intetrestingly, my full installs of Visual Studio 6.0 (not the MSDN library) have never asked for the install CDs.

#5,
You can install every possible option, and you can STILL trigger the "Please insert the disc" option...
It has happened to my users while on airplanes, in the middle of meetings, etc.... and they can no longer launch the affected Office App until it's appetite for that damned stupid CD is fulfilled.
The installation architecture of Microsoft Office is incredibly unfriendly, causes tons of support issues, and is a major source of grief for help desks the world over.
And don't tell me it ain't...

Tech, if it does, then it wasn't installed correctly. Simply if you tell it to install all features now, it will NEVER EVER prompt you for a CD.

I've installed 2003 on hundreds of machines at my workplace.
CDCACHE=2
Never need a CD again. Ever.
He's a moron.

It all made sense when, after I read the article, looked back and checked out the author. Every article he writes is downright laughable.

I've seen the dreaded "Please insert disc" message before. Really quite annoying.
I get it from my MSDN library install. I've let it continue to run and finish, yet it still comes back. Now I just hit cancel.
The fact is, this feature has some design flaws and occasionally doesn't work.

#13, Im disappointed I had to read 13 comments before someone mentioned the option to leave the installation source on the disk. But youre absolutely correct. But its even easier than the setting you mentioned.
In Office 2003, at the end of the setup, you are quite clearly asked to keep the source files on your hard drive if you wish!!!! It doesnt even take much space, and with HDD sizes these days, why not keep them there? They sit in a folder called "MSOCache".
This guy doesnt know what hes doing, snd should be banned from writing technical articles forever. I think maybe he has a corrupted installation/missing reg keys, of there is something screwy with his user rights, so when the MSI resliency feature kicks in (on of the coolest features of an MSI), something is going wrong and it doesnt believe all files are on the HDD where they sould be, therefore you are asked for the install source to fix the problem.
Or he could simply create a shortcut to Word manually, that is not an 'advertised' shortcut created by the installer, and the MSI resiliency feature will not start, hence you dont get 'prompted for the CD/additional files.' At least thats my understanding.
This guy is lame, and deserves the flame.
