Newham chooses Microsoft over Linux for cheap support | |

The London Borough of Newham has signed a deal with Microsoft which it said will be cheaper to support than migrating its systems to Linux. The deal follows a comparison of the costs and benefits of Microsoft versus Linux - carried out by consultancy Capgemini - which concluded that Newham could reduce support costs by 13.5 per cent, or £3.2m over five years, by using Microsoft products. This is double the £1.6m saving from using Linux. But the agreement is non-exclusive and Richard Steel, Newham's head of ICT, told vnunet.com that there were no specific plans to migrate existing non-Windows systems. | ||

Just a quick and non-scientific study:
"let's weigh in with how many servers of each type each of us administrates each day and what they are used for and what roles they play - honestly accounting for the actual steps each of us takes to admin and ckeck on them and then share how much time it takes "X" number of people." We might use these metrics to help communicate what the costs to ourselves is and be better able to understand what we might expect - assuming equal levels of familiarity and skill opposite each area. Since we do not run X-Services on any of our *nix boxes, [the CPU hit is too great to justify it], we'll assume that each is using the CLI for most systems - regardless of OS. Thoughts? |

Ok - what of simply sharing results? See, I am concerned that a lot of what is out there in the press is not based upon a great deal. It often results in a polarization amongst people who would otherwise work quite well togther - a natural tendancy to defend one's own decisions is raised. This is what makes no sense to me, and what I regard as useless.
I like facts - material evidence, which forms the basis for prudent decisions that can be repeated. This I assess is the basis for successful business operations - making repeated good decisions, which are supported by fact. Now prudence, or the practical application of intelligence/information [Prudentia] is relevant to most of the discussions shared here - it is the reason I have elected to particpate at all and attending to these principles is what frees people to explore and innovate and frankly focus on what they like to do - "we call it trading the little stuff for the big stuff..." I noted one time you wrote something to the effect, "certainly you do not regard this forum as serious..?" I knew you meant, but could not help but think...."Man, what a waste of time it must then be - I mean even if we were all to just share some of the more humourous remarks that would have at least some value..." So, here's the crux, people are taking the articles mentioned here seriously. They are however, based less and less upon any actual experience with most of what is written about. So continually, I have suggested we share what we actually see, do and encounter. Those of us counting as many beans as we are bauds might weigh in and share what we are paying, for what and how it measures up to the rhetoric we read in the press. I mean you post a lot in here....recently, I have to. I have to ask, "why, if not to shape at least some part of how technologies might be used to help people?" I mean for me, it is really basic, I do not want to see people make decsions based upon "dogma" - the ultimate expression of arrogance - its essence, actually. I want to see them make the best decison for them and their companies and look at Microsoft, OSS, Apple, & the Commercial Unices with a better understanding of what they are getting into. Microsoft is certainly not all bad and not always wrong and the Linuces are not always good and certainly not always OSS - as an example. I mean, gosh, this is a Win advocacy forum.channel and it is populated with too few pieces and responses that actually reflect what it going on out here and what potential might be realized. That is what I find useless. |

Closed, http://www.webeca.com is one of many applications. Look carefully at it.
It is the front end for the first and only distributed Ocular Healtcare Practice Management Solution there is. While you can't see it, if you knew a good bit about development, you could deduce that behind it is much more. Now ECA, an amazing company, gre form 7 locations to 19, 2 optical labs and a lasiks center in 3 years time. Their CEO and I built this one piece at a time, and base dupon studies for both Duke University and the New England School of Medicine, it was chosen as the best example of how to execute healthcare services over the public networks. It is one of hundreds of applications we have grown with small business people who employ a great number of people. In each case, we work with them, as their IT/MIS dept and something of a CITO in a box. What this means is we manage all locations for them, run their applications, their hosting, hosted Exchange, commerce and much more. Now, growing with our "Customer Colleagues" is how we work - some smaller like ECA, some very large like Noble BioCare in Sweden - a J&J Division. In all cases, there are nice, hard working people simply trying to matter. It appears that you have not benefited from that kind of environment. May be you're just bitter...who knows...I do know that at the end of the day, our guys and clients head home feeling pretty good about what we've added for them. In the case of ECA this week, we added a custom Certificate issuance and redemption engine that also has a direct marketing set of tools and controls, which rewards people for the purchase of protective optics for their kids and is used to fund "First Look" a joint volunteer effort to stamp out amblyopia [lazy eyes]. At the same time, we completed another segment for a law group and based upon our Title 26 Expert Testimony, favorably settled a case for two pharma companies. Also, opened a new enterprise in the area of litigation support to provide forecasting and BPM tools to defending companies. We also added 6 new winderies ot a distribution company's ERP we build - it drives their front end and automated sales management. These and a new scheduling and job management set of tools for Excell Communications also saw great progress...and it's only Wednesday. I ask then, what did you do? Have you thought about it and what you like to do - that mattered? |
