RealNetworks breaks Apple's hold on iPod | |

RealNetworks is expected to announce Monday that it has unlocked some of Apple Computer's most tightly held technology secrets, giving its music a way onto the popular iPod digital music player. The announcement is part of a broader release of RealNetworks software, which will let songs sold from the company's online store play on a variety of portable devices, including the iPod and Microsoft-compatible rivals. RealNetworks has been selling songs from its digital song store since January, but the files could previously be played only on a few portable devices. The new Harmony software, which RealNetworks said mimics the proprietary copy protection used in Apple's iTunes store, is sure to be controversial. Apple has previously refused to provide licenses to companies seeking iPod compatibility, and RealNetworks did not seek permission before releasing its own version of iPod-friendly software. | ||

| These proprietary systems annoy me. I also hate digital rights management implementations. The idea of protecting intellectual property rights is fine. The current digital techniques really suck. I want to load my software on all my PC's without calling up to beg to do so. Music should be play on any gizmo. I can't imagine getting a cassette from a friend in the 80's (I'm old) and not having it play because it wasn't recorded on my player or that my player wasn't the same brand. Companies complaining that they lost money by music sharing is no truer today than it was 20 years ago. If it wasn't shared it wouldn’t have been purchased anyway. In most cases the tunes i like I went out to buy on CD. MP3 produces a thin veneer of sound compared to a good CD played on a high-end sound system. The tunes the college and other young MP3 sharers enjoy today will be purchased tomorrow once they have the means to really enjoy reproduced music on anything other than a computer. |
