Microsoft Says to Hire Up to 7,000 | |

Microsoft announced today that it will hire as many as 7,000 employees worldwide in its current business year as it continues to expand and to fill vacant positions. Microsoft also said it would increase spending on research and development, excluding equity compensation costs, by 4 percent to $4.8 billion in its fiscal year to June 2005, from $4.6 in fiscal 2004. Including the cost of paying employees in stock, Microsoft spent $6.8 billion on R&D last year, but said that number would be slightly lower at around $6 billion in fiscal 2005 due to the lower costs of issuing stock awards. AW: It seems that Microsoft has decided to move to make more use of its massive resources in more ways than giving dividends on its shares. | ||

| More than anything, I think this signals no large mergers of any kind and a lot more work on existing and new projects. |

Hi,
I hired a man from India - he showed up one day and asked for a job. He is among our best and most valued people. He simply wanted to become an American and we simply wanted to help him. He didn't know a lick about us, or us about him, but I bet that thousands of companies hire people for the same reasons we do - they are just good people. I am now very pleased to call Ravi my friend. Also, here in Alabama, we have four relatively new automobile manufacturing plants - Mercedez Benz, Honda, etc... scores build cars, trucks and SUV's that are designed in California - from parts sourced all over the world. What do we call that? "In-Sourcing"? Silly. These plants generated hundreds of smaller companies - many of them software developers and integrators. I assess there are as many jobs coming to America from elsewhere, as there are moving to other contries. BTW, 4,700 to 7,000 new MS jobs are to be filled in WA. State - not India. |

#10 has a very compelling point.
BTW, guys good with their hands and able to run lathes are very detail oriented. They can see things before they exist - they make great network engineers and build great servers. I know this much....if former Infantrymen and Air Defense Artillerymen can learn skills in these areas, then anyone as skilled as a machinist can, too. We hire such men all the time - simply because they have the required attention to detail and pride in work. Even base level work in this field pays well enough to hang on until one can complete more advanced training and gain a few years experience. The field moves fast enough that what is current now, won't be for long - so starting now will insulate one against some of the challenges presented by competition that has more time in the field. You are right, though, it is really tough on people and in ways and for reasons few understand. I wish we could grow much faster - so we could create more opportunities for more people, more quickly. Healing them is harder - we work on that, too - that is, working to provide them a full year to get up to speed without any expectations. I just wish we could do more, more quickly and I know a lot of tiny business owners like me, that feel the same way - often taking huge personal hits to provide for this. We're just too small to do what we want. |

| BHAM! "Roll Tide!" We're evenly split between the two - sometimes it gets nasty :) - Some decked out one of the guy's new baby boy in War Eagle Orange and Blue - he's a die hard Bama Fan - all had a good laugh - especially his wife, who is a War Eagle! |
