| I think its premature to release sample code that won't support 64-bit processors. In two to three years most new processors are likly to be based on AMD's and Intels 64-bit extensions of X86. The code should be native 64-bit. If this early pokey 32-bit WinFS continues MS will again be playing catch-up with the rest of the world. |

| I'm confident it'll have 64 bit fully integrated upon release, but how the heck am I supposed to sample 64 bitness on the um zero 64 bit systems I have (compared to the bazillion 32 bit systems by comparison). 32 bit is still the majority by far -- if you want to release sample code for people to test, it's gonna be 32 bit so people can actually use it and test it. 64 bit will come later. That's still a niche market. Sure, it'll grow... that's why you'll see a 64 bit Longhorn, it's still on the plans... |

Halcyon has a point here.....how do people use computers?
That is the question, or better....how can people use computers...even when they are not directly aware of how they are being used. That is the real driver. How do and can computers and the networks of all types that connect them, enhance both human performance and the human condition - individually and collectively? Gaming? Sure enough, but models that are photo-realistic, dynamic and provide for a completely unique and personal experience will demand every ounce of power that science can provide. The same is true of "practical intelligence" - or information used to make effective decisions that are consistent with individual and collective goals. The same is true of enabling effective interventions. These two reasons drive what is asked of software and all the components that support what software does. Models for everything are what is demanded - having some reasonable expectation for success "before" resources are devoted. Increased power at every level is going to be needed and the sooner such power is available, the faster we will arrive at solutions that allow for predictive intelligence - where its practical application is the goal - e.g., information that can be used and is delivered as "product." Any declaration that this or that is the "only" thing being done with software and therefore "XXXXXXXX" is all that is needed is simply inconsistent with what it is to be human. After all, we aspired to go to the moon simply because we wanted to take a bunch of pictures of men walking on it - this same spirit will continue to drive what we do with sotware and all that supports it. |

| #10 Putting in more RAM will help your system more than anything. You should have at least 1 Gig on that system, more if you're doing video editing or anything like that. |

Software development far underpaces hardware development now, which hurts the driving need for moore's law.
While moore's law may still exist, it's not a requirement anymore. Look at games like Doom3 for example. It's rare that a game comes out that truly pushes the envelope anymore. Office suites like 2003 no longer require hardware that doesn't exist yet, or run slowly on machines with even mediocre hardware (like 2.5gz with 1gig memory). I guess what I'm saying is that there will always be a need for the bleeding edge, but unlike 10 years ago, the software industry is not pushing hardware anymore, on the most part, except on the high-end clustering/databasing aspect. |
