DELEGATES to the 15th International AIDS Conference in Bangkok wound up their meeting yesterday by pledging private, corporate and government donations to help stem the growth of the HIV pandemic. As the six-day conference closed with speeches from former South African president Nelson Mandela and Indian Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi, the European Union and Microsoft mogul Bill Gates announced additional pledges totalling $US102 million ($142 million) to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

I certainly hope Malaria and TB get the majority of the funding, as they are both terribly underfuded (unlike AIDS reasearch), and kill far, far more people than AIDS.

I saw something yesterday that something like 30-40% of the people who have AIDS in Africa also have TB. I can't remember where I saw that though, but they were talking about this problem.
I really applaud these moves by Gates. It's a start in trying to help the problem, and his foundation is not so banal as to introduce the pathetic political posturing that the US govt aid has turned into. Hopefully Gates generousity can help assuage the damage to our reputation caused by Bush.

I read a stat that scared me last week. I don't know if it's true, but it was frightening: 77% of all women in sub-Saharan Africa are HIV positive.
Whoa. I can only hope that is totally wrong, if not then Africa is about to have a massive spike in HIV related deaths that will make the previous decades look like a walk iin the park.
Make you want to cry. It really does.

Good point soda, I hope we can change the "pathetic political posturing" soon.

RMD, thanks. I found a quote from a better place that is more in line with the link you posted. "...as of December 2003, women accounted for nearly 50% of all people living with HIV worldwide and for 57% in sub-Saharan Africa."
But still, 57% is crazy.

On a side, yet related note, I was doing some quickie reading into anti-HIV research and I think the current crop (except one) is doomed to fail.
All the the papers (like I said, except one--and I read 10) failed to mention the sugar-dome protective covering on gp120, which prevents gp120 from being detected by the body's immune system. They're all working on something to destroy gp120 (a good start) but since it's in stealth mode because of the sugar coating the body can't detect it, I don't think they're going to get it right.
What they need is something that (1) destroys the dome, and (2) destroys gp120 while keeping the CD4 t-cells at bay, in that order. (The last thing you want is the target getting too close to the sniper.) Heck, even one company was trying to teach the immue system to attack gp120 itself. Which is insane since that's what the virus wants--to match up with the CD4 receptors on the T-cell....
I'm no expert, but that just doesn't seem right. I sure hope I'm wrong on this, but I can't predict success when that is staring them in the face. It doesn't take long to research how HIV infects a cell on the 'Net, so I'm sure they know more than me, but jeez... it all looks like a big mistake to even try to attack the virus that way.
/here's hoping Bill G's money discovers something useful.

Thanks again sodablue, for reminding us all why Kerry isn't worth our vote this year. You condemn Bush for polticizing AIDS remedies, while doing the same thing yourself.
On topic... Thanks BillG. GIVING, the way Americans should... with their own money, not forced by the government.

Thats funny:

Kerry himself "passed the bill" out of his office. I hope you are not disputing that. If you are trying to spin the fact his concern for aids research is less than that of gwb does, then you are as bad as all the other polictical wingers out there.
As for significant pieces of legislation passed by Kerry, you must not have done your research. He has had NUMEROUS items passed in the legislation, all of which were significant. Just in the Foreign Aid legislation alone he had 28 bills passed. And that is just foreign aid!
Are you a right wing spinner too?

And you clearly missed the point.
I quote "Thanks again sodablue, for reminding us all why Kerry isn't worth our vote this year." from mooresa56. That implies that Kerry woudn't pass an Aids bill if one hadn't been passed, or that he would relieve the bill. But in reality, HE SUPPORTS the bill. So whether or not one voted for Bush or Kerry, there would be a substantial aids program.
The spin you and mooresa56 are presenting is trying to sway voters from Kerry by saying he DOESN'T support this bill.
That is the probem with politics. Too many spinners out there.
