Office 2003/XP Add-in: Remove Hidden Data | |

With this add-in you can permanently remove hidden and collaboration data, such as change tracking and comments, from Word 2003/XP, Excel 2003/XP, and PowerPoint 2003/XP files. When you distribute an Office document electronically, the document might contain information that you do not want to share publicly, such as information you’ve designated as “hidden” or information that allows you to collaborate on writing and editing the document with others. The Remove Hidden Data add-in is a tool that you can use to remove personal or hidden data that might not be immediately apparent when you view the document in your Microsoft Office application. | ||

| They are talking about removing the underlying metadata, which allows for more uses of the document across review and version processes within organizations - knowing that companies that prepare a lot of documents often base these documents on existing instruments - it is simply a tool to clean this up and allow for a clean copy to be released with desired data, only. |

| The Office Suite apps are hardly the only apps that have "hidden" data/metadata (in some versions of WordPerfect, for example, the default setting is to save your Undo/Redo information with the file--easily viewable by anyone to whom you send the file!). The most glaring concern here is the "track changes" feature, which can be and has been used incorrectly, but I would recommend user education far more than some blanket "remove hidden data" button or feature--you may very well want that "hidden data" in the file, and removing it would defeat the purpose. |
