Boston Macworld Expo Opens Sans Apple | |

The Macworld Conference and Exposition opened Monday in Boston, its first return since leaving Beantown for New York in 1998. The event is also the first major trade show to be held at the Boston Convention and Exposition Center, warming it up for the Democratic National Convention later this month. Apple and several major vendors are absent from the show, including Adobe, Epson, Filemaker and Palm, although Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, and Quark are exhibiting at the event. This has impacted projected attendance and profit for the local Boston community, according to press reports. Past events have seen as many as 50,000 attendees, while only 10,000 are expected this week, potentially injecting nearly US$9 million into the local economy, in contrast to original estimates of more than $40 million. | ||

| Where's the connection? Apple displays everything it makes at trade shows: hardware (including desktops, servers, laptops, and peripherals), software, digital devices... Are they getting out of those businesses too? |

Why are G5s their only desktops? You are counting iBooks... Let's count iMacs and eMacs (they are desktops, aren't they?).
243,000 iMacs and eMacs -- $235 million in revenue 173,000 Power Macs (including 13,000 Xserves) -- $332 million Total Desktops: 416,000 -- $567 million 240,000 iBooks -- $261 million 220,000 PowerBooks -- $435 million Total Laptops: 460,000 -- $696 million 90% of laptop unit sales, not a third... 81% of the laptop profits, not a third. "No such product anymore." Of course there are. They sold 243,000 of them this quarter, and they have said their expectations for next quarter will be unaffected by constrained supply. Note: it's not that they don't exist, or that they won't be selling them this quarter, they simply won't allow additional orders. There are plenty in the channel, although that will dry up, and there were plenty of edu orders placed in advance. And let's also point out that eMac is still available, and the next iMac has been announced, moron.
As for investors, what investor would ask a company to abandon 28% of their revenue? Particularly when every Mac segment grew (except the iMac/eMac) accounting for 19% revenue growth... Particularly when the PowerMac segment alone grew 30%... You are a moron... many of us have told you this. We don't care what you think because your thoughts are useless. |

And, Parkker, you say: "I think that investors will be telling Apple loud and clear to dump the desktop business ASAP."
Strange, I thought their investors would be very happy ASAP. I know I made 12% on my investment in a single day yesterday. ASAP indeed. |

Well.... what? The industry continues to consolidate. Gateway and eMachines would have lost market share if they hadn't merged... Apple is growing, the investor market is loving them...
