In order to create a small file, Apple uses "an extreme form of compression that takes a sample of the sound at intervals," explains the report. "The bit rate for iTunes, 128, is so low that when played side by side against the original, the difference is audible not only to audio enthusiasts, but also to mortals with ordinary hearing," reporter Randall Stross claims. | ||

| That's retarded, Parkker... that's not even what this story is about. When the guy listened to the CD vs. downloaded songs on a high-quality stereo system he heard the difference. This has nothing to do with the iPod, which I have personally tested against the Dell DJ, Nitrus, and iRiver.... And 128 mp3s are not 128 AACs which are recorded from the original or remastered masters. |

| In response to SODAJERK. Where do you and others come up with the ridiculous notion that Apple or any of the other online music stores are encoding thier selections from "the original or remastered masters?" Do you really think that all of these labels are actually pulling master tapes out of thier vaults for lossy encoding? Please provide ANY link to information that backs up the claim that the original masters are being used by any of these stores. I'd also like to ask you if you really believe that going back to an original master would make any discernable difference in a file recorded with ANY codec at 128kbps? |
