Actually, if you're a paranoid Windows user like me, then you're checking Windows Update every day. Because of how aggressively I patch, and because virtually all the headline grabbers have taken advantage of unpatched systems, most of the news wasn't scaring me to death--until this week's reports of two keystroke loggers; one that neither Internet Explorer nor the best anti-virus defenses were well-prepared for, and another for which a client-side patch existed but was alarming in the way it targeted bank accounts. | ||

| Regardless of whether the information can leave your computer via the Internet, keystroke loggers in general represent an additional problem: the ability of one program to see the input destined for another program. If I recall correctly, one of the features of Palladium/NGSCB was to implement secure channels by which keyboard input can be delivered securely through the operating system and to the destination program without being accessible to other programs. |

As I mentioned before on this board, outgoing firewalls are completely and utterly useless.
A software based firewall CANNOT STOP A PROGRAM ON THE LOCAL MACHINE FROM ACCESSING THE NETWORK. Period. End of story. Nough said. It took me about 30 minutes to write a VB application that successfully downloads a file from a remote server, all while ZoneAlarm and Norton Internet Security were watching and set to stop all unauthorized outgoing connections. The fact of the matter is that outgoing firewalls only stop lazy hackers from easily getting out. Anybody who knows their target has one installed will spend an extra few minutes making sure they can still get out to the net undetected. The end result is that the user has a false sense of saftey, and not much else. Only in a managed environment can this kind of software firewall work, and that's a long way off. |
