Microsoft Corp., author of the Microsoft® Caller ID for E-mail proposal, and Meng Weng Wong, co-founder and CTO of Pobox.com and author of the Sender Policy Framework (SPF), have announced today that they have successfully converged the two proposals into one specification named Sender ID and submitted to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for consideration as an industrywide standard for e-mail authentication as part of the IETF's efforts to define effective industry Internet e-mail standards to address the problem of spam. Sender ID is designed to help verify the source of e-mail to help eliminate domain spoofing and provide greater protection against phishing schemes. By providing a unified specification, Microsoft and Wong hope to simplify industry adoption of effective e-mail authentication technology, thereby helping more swiftly provide greater spam protection to e-mail users worldwide. | ||

| This could work if the sender identity tag is unspoofable. If it's something like IP or MAC address, then this is a waste of time. We need a real solution. |

Please elaborate...please feel free to show how well linux can solve all the world's spam problems or how crappy MS is (crappy? who uses that word). Please tell me how, if everyone ran linux, every user would keep there patches up-to-date and no boxes would get rooted. humor me |

#5 I fail to see how or why Linux would need to be brought into this conversation. MS is submitting their anti spam proposal to a standards body to change the way that SMTP itself functions. Seems to be vendor independant solution.
I kind of have to agree with mssucks (dammit!). I'm afraid that this change will only be effective until the spammers find a new method for sending me trash. Hopefully I'm wrong, but we'll see what happens. Oh, And I say crappy all the time. It's a great way to vent frustrations without saying S*** or F*** in front of small children. |

It doesn't "change" the way SMTP functions, but the rides on top of smtp to verify the list of IP's that are traceable. "I kind of have to agree with mssucks (dammit!).
