WordPerfect 12 and StarOffice 7.0 aren't the dominant office suite players, but each brings strong qualities to the field, such as affordability and ease of use. But do they have what it takes to stand up to Microsoft Office? Read our reviews to find out. If you just need basic Office suite theses are great alternatives to Office when costs are a major issue. If you need collaboration and integration into enterprise apps, than Office is the way to go. I would say that $300 dollars for Office would give you a decent ROI over a 3 year life-cycle in comparison to these products because of all the productivity features that office provides.

Real time preview, is that really needed in a WYSIWYG word processor? I your running word or WP in the 'normal' mode would not it display it in the print out mode?
How compatible is Star Office? Last time i checked there were comments by several companies including SUN that they had to have 'MS Office Stations' to test/convert documents so that they could verify that documents would be usable by customers outside of SUN. I know of 2 companies that stopped using Star and Open office because of compatible issues. Sticking with Office 97/Office 2000 mix. |

If I didn't have Office, and I just needed wordprocessing and spreadsheets (normal office related stuff) I'd never touch WordPerfect (I dislike it), I'd go streight for OpenOffice.org. It's the best OSS package out there and it works great. These guys know what they're doing.
Now if they'd only write an Outlook replacement that was free and could connect to exchange servers (I know about Ximian Evolution, but haven't used it) that would just take the cake. |

File maker rocks!
I haven't used it in like 8 years, but it was the bomb back then in ease of use and sharing over the network. Didn't scale well, but it was a perfect fit for small businesses. humor |

| #10 I've got to agree with you on this. I wish MS would support more alternative file formats. I just had to install WP 2000 on my machine to convert some Quattro Pro docs to Excel. Ridiculous that I should have to go to those lengths to move somebody to MS Office. |
