The Future of Microsoft's Xbox | |

To the gaming community, the Microsoft Xbox console has a lot to offer and promises even more in the future. But the company has not been able to get worldwide sales, especially Japanese sales, to the levels it hoped for. Depending on whose report you read, the Sony PlayStation is outselling the Xbox at a 4 to 1 pace, and that's an optimistic ratio. The Xbox has become the number-two platform in the USA, ahead of the Nintendo GameCube, but it still has not been popular enough to become a profit center for Microsoft. All this has recently been compounded by Microsoft's decision to cancel or delay the release of its online game True Fantasy Live Online. | ||

Dvorak makes me sick.
X-box was a version 1 product. It's been a damn good learning experience for microsoft. With XNA and with Xbox2 Microsoft will open up gaming to developers in a completely new way. MS has billions of dollars and from what I've been hearing they've been working thier tails off to make their version 2 much more attractive form xbox 1.0. Again, MS doesn't expect profits from their x-box investment for another 3 to 5 years. Doomsayers keep subscribing to Dvorak, for the past 15 years he's been claiming that Microsoft would get out of the OS business. Not much to see here, move on |

Microsoft has a habit of dropping hardware products and leaving their customers in the lurch, so it is certainly not beyond them to drop the X-Box, without warning, and move along.

| Dvorak is always fun to read. Some of his insights are genius. Some are wack. Some are wacky genius. He's funny in the same way el Rushbo is funny. Don't take him seriously. His comments are just his opinions, not laws of nature. What spews forth is stream of conciousness output, not necessarily well considered and thought out concepts. Like I said, funny guy. |

Thanks, jcvortex--that linked article is hilarious and dead-on.
Dvorak here conveniently leaves out that the XBox recently outsold the PS2 in the US, among other things. Its sales could be better, but I wouldn't call it a failure. |

TechLarry, I disagree. Microsoft fields hundreds of products TODAY, and they have dropped how many products in the past year? Well? Wiireless router... thats 1. How many more? How many have they dropped in the past TEN years? 20? Sure. In other words, an INSIGNIFICANT amount.
But your precious Apple would never do such a thing. Lets conveniently forget that they field a TENTH the number of active products. Yet, they fail at a much higher percentage. Anyone remember the Newton? The cube? JWM - MSFT was the newbie console maker, and now they have a ridiculous amount of third-party support. The newbie, quite frankly, has kicked ass. To even be neck and neck with the veteran Nintendo is a testiment to just how RIGHT Microsoft got it. Did you even see any of the E3 coverage this year? XBox's lineup was head and shoulders above Sony/Nintendo. Just look at the various E3 awards given by the critics. What really burns you... is that Microsoft put out a popular and successful product without leveraging their "monopoly" at all. You and the ABMers didn't think that was possible. | Mr. Dee--that's sort of a concern of mine as well, because I don't think MS is keen on entering this market. My guess is that, if they introduce an XBox/PC unit, it will be marketed as a home electronics device. I think they may be making a mistake if they do that... if anything, make it an XBox/Windows Media Center combo. Don't tread on the PC space. |
