Microsoft's Windows operating system runs on more than 90 percent of the world's computers, a market share that many believe is so overwhelming that no other company can ever hope to challenge it. But maybe a little penguin with roots in Scandinavia is about to do the unthinkable. The Linux open-source operating system appears to be winning over a critical mass of corporate customers that could ultimately spill over into the broader consumer technology market. In a piece today, PCWorld says Linux "may not topple the Microsoft empire anytime soon, but recent offerings indicate that Linux distributors, hardware vendors, and developers are dedicated to making Linux on the desktop a reality. Distributions such as Xandros, Sun's Java Desktop System, and Lindows' Linspire are targeting new users interested in migrating from Windows. They offer easy-to-use and install distributions as well as inexpensive PCs preloaded with Linux, available at retailers such as Wal-Mart." | ||

While Mandrake is really getting better and better, and so is Fedora and SuSe, .... I don't see any of these major distros making a dent in the Windows XP market place. Windows is the defacto standard for the PC operating system.
I see a single sugar ant attacking an African elephant here.... sure, it might tickle... but no, it goes unnoticed. |

"I see these articles as sort of an open-source self affirmantion. A mantra that the OSS faithful repeat each day at dawn. "Someday.", they chant, "Someday we'll really matter!"
I'm sure IBM, Novell, Oracle, HP completely agree with you here. |

Halcyon - OSS should be a tool. Unfortunately it's treated as a religion by it's proponents.
I'm currently deploying an open source build management solution here at work, which revolves around CruiseControl.NET. But I'm also fully expecting and anticipating what it will require for us to support it ourselves. We're also going to be using nant(as well as VisualBuild), nunit, ndoc and a couple other open source tools. But then this is a developer community, so we can get away with supporting things ourselves. If i was deploying this to end-users, I would question my sanity. |

| i dont totally disagree with you msucks. Linux might very well provide a bit of counterbalance. But to call it "greed" is like saying I am greedy because I have more money in my savings account at the end of the week, than when I started. ACCUMULATION of wealth is not GREED. |

msucks, you're looking at it a bit too simply. Is MSFT any worse for having $60B of their investor's money in a bank account... as opposed to spending it on their behalf? No. Exxon sends the money home as a dividend. GE invests much and sends the rest to its investors as dividends. Money is money is money. To quibble about it because of where it is stored is silly.
BTW, I'm not quite sure I understand what "but 60million in stock options or company CEOs" means. This post was edited by mooresa56 on Tuesday, June 01, 2004 at 22:32. |

This is ONLY your interpretation of what their view MIGHT be, nothing else. This is not fact but merely your opinion. Unless you are certified by these companies to speak on their behalf you should not state your opinion as fact. It makes you look stupid! Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but opinions do not prove anything. Certainly not that they agree with you. "As for Oracle and Novell -- software companies. Both hate Microsoft. They would rather you run their crap on ANYTHING but Windows. linux is the ONLY UNIX with any market share future so supporting linux is a no-brainer." Ah.. so you are saying that to these companies for some reason OSS really does matter and its not just the OSS faithfuls chanting so? "None of this changes the fact that linux is really no closer to catching Microsoft on the desktop than it was a decade ago -- a decade echoing the fanatical press and zealot "predictions" gone hollow and brittle over time." Another uninformed opinion based on zero fact! A decade ago no major corporations, cities or government used Linux on the desktop. Yet now some do and the number is growing. But in your opinion all that doesnt make linux really any closer. I guess ignorance is bliss eh? |

msucks, those ceo's don't set their own compensation packages. They are recruited by board of directors, at competitive salaries. They are just like you... valuing their work/skills/knowledge against other people of similar accomplishment.
Since when did the value of your compensation become a measure of GREED? Its not. Like I said, using your definition... I am greedy, if my savings grow at all each year.
