Microsoft has launched an effort to produce a version of Windows for high-performance computing, a move seen as a direct attack on a Linux stronghold. High-performance computing once required massive, expensive, exotic machines from companies such as Cray, but the field is being remade by the arrival of clusters of low-end machines. While the trend could be considered an opportunity for Microsoft, which has long been the leading operating system company, Linux has actually become the favored software used on these clusters. | ||

I wonder if they will write for the Power5?
I like the scenario of Microsoft building OS support for distributed computing, whether it's among regular desktops or offloaded to an HPC system. Personally, I would love to spread Windows Media encoding tasks among several computers transparently, similar to Apple's Shake (where's Sodajerk? Yes, I complimented Apple!). I know there are ways to accomplish this, but having it baked into the OS, available for any application to harness easily would be cool. I have to agree, though--Windows has its work cut out for it here. I can see where they could add value, though, perhaps through something like an external interface to an HPC system through Indigo. It's probably not pure HPC where they could propose a significantly better solution (the hardware is more the limiting factor here...), but in the other benefits the platform can offer. |
