Google faces a difficult task if it tries to transplant its successful Web search business to the desktop. The company is reportedly preparing to release downloadable software that enables people to search for text and files stored on their computer's hard drive. The move would dramatically expand Google's search business beyond the Web while taking direct aim at Microsoft, which is itself getting ready to take on Google's dominance in Web search with its own technology. | ||

This seems like a generated story--must be a slow news day. Why are they positioning this as Google vs. Microsoft? I can understand it when it comes to search engines, but I don't see it on the desktop. It's not like Google is creating a competing OS. And as the article points out, Google is going up against other players in this market, not so much Microsoft.
It will be interesting to see how they approach it. The PageRank system doesn't seem like it would work on the desktop. |

| WinFS, based on SQL, will probably be superior for fast search and indexing whenever it is fine-tuned this century. Does anyone know what the minimum requirements for Google's desktop search system would be? |
