Microsoft to submit antispam standard | |

Microsoft on Wednesday said it plans to submit a proposal to make its antispam technology a standard, becoming the latest Internet giant to seek industry approval for the adoption of its technique. The technology, called "Caller ID for E-mail," is an Internet Protocol-based method to ensure that the sender's return e-mail address is authentic. Many spammers have used a method called "spoofing," which makes their return addresses appear legitimate to the recipient's spam filters. Often, people open unwanted spam, thinking it originated from a contact, which could lead to the further dissemination of viruses and user annoyance. Microsoft plans to file its proposal to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), an industry standards body, either this week or next. | ||

SPAM is no longer the major pain these days. It's a pain, but NOTHING compared to the rampant SpyWare infections that are going on.
It's BAD folks. I spend 30% of my service hours removing this diabolical CRAP from users computers these days. TL |

| What's to stop the spammers from spoofing a valid address? This might help a bit initially, but as long as there are open relays on the Internet we'll have spam. |

happy guy I'm not sure you read the ms proposal if your asking that question.
HELO (mailservera.mycompany.com [1.1.1.1]) FROM <johnsmith@somewhere.com> < insert here new code that checks that 1.1.1.1 is in fact a list mailserver in somewhere.com's dns records... if true.. continue.. if not true return 550 'mail does not appear to be from senders domain'> ... anyway it's an interesting propsal that has some issues, but is somewhat more flexable and less complicated then other's i've seen. |

Absolutely correct. The blurb I read didn't go into any specifics. After reading the proposal, I'm not sure this is going to help one heck of alot in the long term (but am more comfortable with it than I was). I think it does provide a nice building block for future methods when they become necessary. Either way, it'll be interesting to see how much crabbing comes out of this proposal. I think it will help tremendously. It means that from addresses can no longer be spoofed, or just plain made up. If this were to be adopted universally, at least you'd know what domain the email came from.

I dunno about that. It will probably go a long way to eliminating spam via spoofed e-mail addresses, but I highly doubt that the spammers will not be able to come up with a way to either circumvent the proposed solution or to find an entirely new method of sending spam. |

| Well it's a start. Moving away from the Unix open-trust model to something where we assume everyone is hostile and verify their authenticity is a good thing. |
