Red Hat unveils Linux desktop system | |

In a sign that demand is growing for alternatives to Microsoft Corp.'s Windows software, Red Hat Inc. will release a version of the Linux operating system and other programs tailored for desktop computers in corporations, universities and government agencies. Red Hat Desktop, announced Tuesday in London, will be targeted at organizations that are looking to upgrade their PCs but don't want or need all the features that ship with the latest version of Windows, said Matthew Szulik, Red Hat's chief executive. | ||

210 million copies of Windows XP SOLD (just in OEM/Retail) and growing rapidly tells me differently. People buy what works for them, what they are comfortable with, and what helps make them productive and keep them entertained. I think MS is growing stronger and richer because of their success with this latest OS. But it NEVER hurts to research before you buy. |

Ask him how much the hardware cost him that he needed back then in order to run NT4. I remember having a pretty decent machine to play games with and my jaw dropped to the floor when i read the hardware requirements for NT. |

| Their desktop is nothing new anyways. Its just marketing and a pricecut of their RHL enterprise when bought in bulk and with an added AS. Nothing new. Just the old stuff cheaper. |

Do you have a link to provide this evidence? My experience and research is just the opposite. Thousands of people every day go in and buy RETAIL boxes from the shelves. Majority are upgrades. And all they need to do is put the CD in their CDrom drive. They don't need to worry about doing fdisk/format/startup disk/etc. You need to do quite a bit more research. "Certainly people don't buy it because it works for them, most people don't even know anything about the alternatives." Certainly, they do buy it because it works for them. They know this from daily use at work, friends and family. If most people don't know about alternatives, then that is their fault for not researching. But I can tell you that most people do know that alternatives exist now, and Windows XP still continues to grow at a fast pace. "Nobody ever researches the qualities of the OS they are getting with their PC." Wrong. "There aren't even any of those famous "Checklist" comparisons near computers running different OSes. Actually, there probably aren't even any computers showing OSes aside from Apple and Microsoft's." Never been to Walmart then have you? "They will just assume it works and if it doesn't they can call tech support or bring it to a shop." No they won't assume that. The majority of the world who buys a computer has probably used the Windows OS at work or school. And even if they didn't, and they buy a new PC, once they turn the PC on, it's pretty darn easy from there. |

Sorry, but those links are not only old and outdated, but do NOT show actual NUMBERS, when in fact Retail sales (BOXED) of Windows OS's do sell very well.
Windows XP Upgrade Retail Box sales are STILL in demand if you look at retail software sales figures. Windows XP Home/Professional are in the TOP 5 for RETAIL box sales. Research! Research! All you did is confirm that corporations are bigger clients than home users. That isn't news. And if you avoided Walmart, that would explain why you haven't seen the Linux Computer Desktops next to Windows Desktops, lol. |
