Could IT Mood Swings Boost Enterprise Desktop Linux? | |

Linux on end users' desktops remains largely elusive for enterprises, but the open-source operating system could become more attractive as the demands of IT departments shift, said panelists and attendees at the Desktop Linux Summit 2004 here. Microsoft Corp., the maker of the dominant Windows operating system, and other proprietary software vendors themselves could cause the spark for broader desktop Linux adoption by forcing IT departments into tougher licensing stances or costly upgrade cycles, said Linux backers and IT consultants at the conference on Friday. | ||

so what part of the current Linux user base is going to support these new masses?
A small user base combined with a fragmented and confusing product line makes it even harder to justify going all Linux. MS (with some help from 3rd parties too!) has the needed tools for the enterprise- not only the needed end user apps, but also the IT management/deployment tools that are critical. What MS needs to do is start attacking the Linux hype- maybe do the same thing Apple used to do to MS-- there is no step 3(456...)!! There are too many non IT/non technical people starting to jump on the over hyped Linux bandwagon. I am seeing this first hand- we have an IT guy that knows only NT 4 (and not very well) that wants to go to Active Directory as a stepping stone to go to a Linux/Open LDAP environment. The problem is he doesnt know the first thing about either one! He and others just think TCO is going to go down because they arent paying Microsoft. Does any one have a good link that explanes the current licensing system. CAL licensing seems to be sorley misunderstood We are a company of less than 75 (but going up) that brings in millions and our network is definatley our weakest point. |
