Over 36% of software in the world is pirated. Out of this, over 50% is due to what Microsoft calls "casual copying". We all know what this is and in some insignificant way, at one time or another most users have participated in it. It has nothing to do with "cracking" software or disk cloning. It is simply the act of installing the same piece of software from its installation disks on more computers than your EULA allows. This could be something like loaning it to a friend or even just installing the same software on two computers in your home or office. In order to combat this prevalent occurrence, Microsoft introduced a technology they call Product Activation into their Office XP software earlier this year. The product would allow users to launch it up to 50 times before requiring an activation code to be sent to Microsoft over the Internet (Users could activate at anytime before that as well). Now the latest version of their flagship consumer OS, Windows XP, includes similar functionality. | ||

To all these people complaining about Microsoft being a monopoly, which therefore drives up prices, and justifies piracy...
What about games? I've been complaining about video game prices for years, yet you'd be hard pressed to show any monopoly exists in that market. Furthermore if you look at any market where Microsoft is not a player, you'll see software prices even higher and more out of whack. How much does Adobe Photoshop cost? The point is, the monopoly card obviously doesn't play here as there is no evidence to justify it. |

#17 You should just give up after saying "PhotoShop is worth more than an OS, since you can actually produce something with it, the whole point of owning a PC. " That is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard(no offence). Dude Photoshop would not run without the OS. |

#20 I can see you really don't know what you are talking about and that is why you are going to the stupid comments. I will ignore your those comments and clue you in on the importance of an OS.
For programmers, the OS is the world that they work in. When you develop software you want an OS that gives you a wide variety of features. All applications run the way they do (mostly) because of the features provide within the OS. You you could write a cool application in DOS that looks like windows application but it would take forever because the OS only have basic features. If I wanted to write an application that played a video in DOS I would have to get some video player and have the user install it whenever they install my app(or write a video player). With windows, I know it comes with a video player that I could use within my app and the user does not have to deal with a long and complicated install(or lots of bugs from programmers writing everything themselves). The point here is YOU SAVE MONEY and time with a good OS with great features. Developing software cost money. |

#28 First, I write drivers for printers and do some imaging software. None of this can be done well with VB and most of the time I don't use the UI(mostly for test programs). But both are OS dependent(especially drivers). I have also done a SCSI driver on Unix(5 yrs ago).
Second, you said the following: "ease of application development means nothing to end users and unless your ..." You obviously missed the point of my last post. The harder the application is to develop the more it will cause the end user. Also, the more complex a task the higher the risk of bugs. That is why assemble language is almost never used. I could go on but I don't thing you are understanding what I am saying. Oh well!!!! |

#37 Sounds like you have a some issues with Microsoft that go far beyond product activiation. Actually, Microsoft is not the only company to have features like product activation. As a developer, much of the software that I use requires license keys to be purchased before the software can be "turned on". Some of them even check to see that nobody else on the netwok "turned on" the software with the same key. Other companies require that a special hardware device (a dongle) be installed before the product will work. Product activation is not a new concept.
An honest man will have respect for the law. The law always was that one license of Windows granted you the right to install on one PC. If you installed on more than one, you broke the license, broke the law, and were dishonest. I don't see a reason why an honest person has an issue with product activation. Personally, I have no music, movies, games, or software that I have not legally licensed or purchased. I even registered WinZip. If I consider Microsoft prices too high, I won't buy their software. My integrity is worth more to me than $200 for an upgrade to Windows XP Pro. |
