Looks like a 'Shorthorn' release is officially off the table. But a new 'Windows XP Premium' bundle is in the works, as is a scaled-back version of the WinFS file system.
Microsoft officials have said they are ready to cut some "minor" Longhorn Windows features to get the already late operating-system release out the door by 2006, but has been steadfast in its refusal to offer specifics.
But public and private sources are beginning to share details of how the tortuous Windows roadmap is being re-jiggered.

"One developer close to Microsoft's Longhorn effort said Windows Media Player 9 is junk in that area presently."
That developer would want to stay anonymous with comments like that! =)
If these features that are being cut out are so "minor", why not just get a few developers on the side working on them to see if they can be completed in the next 2 years?

I'm not complaining, I'm making fun of them.

magilla:
If you are going to troll, go to slashdot.
Seriously, because Microsoft is going to offer an updated retail package with XPSP2 and WMP10 integrated, all of a sudden Linux is more attractive?

CPU, how is that trolling? Microsoft initially PROMISED Longhorn in the 2004-2005 time period. With SA they promised a more rapid rollout of upgrades and features. Now it is apparent that we are looking at a 5 to 6 year gap in major OS upgrades, and we still have no idea what is really going to be in it. SP2 could have and should have been released a long time ago, the changes are not that significant. WMP10 isn't going to change much (in terms of format features), it is primarily going to create hooks to stores that already exist.
It's not simply a matter of what is in the product that is going to be offered, but rather, it is a question of what is the roadmap, what are their intentions, what are the costs and benefits.

soda: I'm sorry, but what you said has NOTHING to do with what magilla stated.
Now you are saying that Microsoft needs to rush the products?
They NEVER said that there would be a more rapid rollout of upgrades and features, they merely said that the SA customers would get the upgrades free via their subscription.
Also, I'm fairly certain that Microsoft will in the lease offer a discount of some sort or another (could be small, could be as much as free, who knows) to SA customers as compensation for no new OS upgrades.

magilla kept it very simple. His analogy to 98SE and ME sounds very much like what I said in brief.
Microsoft certainly said that SA subscribers would receive upgrades and the new license agreements would herald a phase of more incremental updates.
I'm not attacking MS to rush anything: I am complaining and criticizing them from both ends: delays and also product releases which do not offer much. Both are a problem.
As for your "fairly certain", who's told you this? Sounds like wishful thinking on your part... which also suggests you feel burnt a little bit too.

Yes, clearly things have changed; however, when XP first came out and SA was first developed, we were certainly told a new OS would be released in 2004... when things had already changed and Blackcomb was pushed back... haven't you noticed that most things promised in Blackcomb are now in Longhorn... or at least were up until this month...
SAs are certainly expiring and are not going to include Longhorn.

I thought that Blackcomb had been merged into the Longhorn development cycle? That it is now to be Longhorn Server and the name Blackcomb was dropped. Has anyone heard otherwise?

Yeah, happy, that's basically what I was saying... But my point is: everything MS says eventually changes... Remember, Longhorn first emerged as an "interim" release when Microsoft figured they couldn't deliver Blackcomb... Then as time passed, it basically became apparent that Gates was pushing for all of the functionality of Blackcomb for Longhorn and Longhorn began slipping... and Blackcomb simply disappears....
Maybe it will reappear when Longhorn hardly delivers what was promised when it was Blackcomb, who knows....
