Microsoft's 'iPod killer' ready for Christmas | |

The first handheld devices to play music and movies on Microsoft's so-called "iPod killer" software will be available in Europe in the second half of 2004. The devices will run on Microsoft's yet-to-be-unveiled Portable Media Centre software in a direct assault on iPod, Apple Computer's hugely popular digital music player. Working with a host of manufacturing partners, Microsoft is introducing a device that plays movies and stores digital photos as well as songs in a bid to grab a share of the fast-growing digital media player market. | ||

I don't know about this one.
One thing that makes me love my mp3 player (an iRiver iHP-120) is how small it is. I can keep it in my jacket pocket all the time. This thing seems bulky. In addition, I don't really need a mobile video player. Maybe I'm just behind the coolness curve, but it seems to me that this is addressing a gap that doesn't exist. |

| Pocket PC=wide functionality, tiny amount of storage. iPod-killer=limited functionality, huge amount of storage. As nice as the idea is, it's still not until the end of the year and I have to imagine that Pocket PCs will have such storage in two years time, so I'm not so sure such a device will be around long. By the time they reduce the bulk, the technology will be about small enough to fit into a Pocket PC. |
