Microsoft Turns On Pop-Up Blocker | |

Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, in addition to providing a host of security enhancements, will block pop-ups in Internet Explorer by default, Microsoft says. The beta version of the Windows XP update released in December last year always included a pop-up blocker, but the feature was turned off by default. Starting with the latest test version of Service Pack 2 (SP2), called Release Candidate 1 (RC1), pop-up blocking will be activated by default, according to an update to the fact sheet for Windows XP SP2 on Microsoft's Web site. | ||

| #3 - The Internet Explorer popup blocker intercepts the popup before the Google toolbar does, but if the IE popup blocker is told to let it through the Google one can still stop it. |

JWM says a lot of people aren't smart enough to install a pop-up blocker. He is so right. Last year we began preinstalling iClean on new PC's and set it to block pop-ups and clean cookies and delete ALL temp files. iClean is very cool.

The inclusion of a popup blocker in IE will result in popups being replaced with far more anoying advertising, like flash ads that fly all over your damn screen.
It's the start of an advertising cold war. With each new ad blocking technology there will be a new kind of ad. These ads will likely become more and more anoying. I, for one, would be perfectly happy to close popups when the appear if it means we don't have to go through the upcoming ad wars. Eventually ads will become so intrusive that people will no longer visit sites that use them. This will force sites to move to a subscription model, not to mention kill a lot of sites out there that people probably won't want to pay for. (Like this site, for instance.) |

| bobsireno: This isn't about innovation - it's about providing a function that should have been there a long time ago. Yes, Microsoft is "following the crowd" but it's better than not having it at all, especially for those who don't know any better. |

#16 - I think you're missing the point.
What happens when sites now inject entire pages between page navigations? What happens when they use DHTML to replace the entire content of the screen with an ad you can't get rid of for 10 seconds? What happens when... Eventually the web will become unusable and sites will move to subscription models... and it's all because people get so fussy about a window that pops up which they can simply close. |

This will lead to more intrusive ads, but that's happing already anyway so it really doesn't matter. Yes it will lead to a few sites going under or subscribing.. but seriously would any of you subscribe to this site?? yeah maybe 1% of you but I doubt it. (That's not to say it's not an interesting site... but nobody would pay to access it so it would just go under.)
You know non of this would be a problem if people just dealt with simple gif\jpg adds on the headers\footers etc... the vast vast majority dont mind those, and even actually read them, but all the popup crap and even worse the flash crap is going to backfire, take me... I refuse to have flash installed on my system for exactly this reason. (yes it limits my ability to see some sites.. but screwem..) |

It's only happening in a few scattered areas. Popup ads are by far the most common form of web advertising. The reason sites don't use banner ads (or don't only use them) is because they are far less effective than popup ads. On average a banner ad may have a 1/10th of 1% click through rate. A popup ad has an average of a 1/2 of 1% click through rate. That's 5 times as effective. When popups are impossible to show to 90% of web surfers (because of the popup blocker), those relatively rare forms of advertising will move in to replace them. You think you're anoyed now? Just wait 6 months. Both the web and its users are going to suffer because of the IE popup blocker. |
