IBM Pushes Linux on Desktops | |

Already, about 15,000 of IBM's more than 300,000 employees have moved to the Linux desktop, said Scott Handy, IBM's vice president of worldwide Linux strategy and market development. While Handy believes that the Linux desktops are costing IBM less than the $5000 to $7000 per year analyst firms say it costs to maintain Windows systems, the switch to a Linux PC may not be a great deal for everyone. | ||

"In January, a memo from IBM Chief Information Officer Bob Greenberg challenged the company to move to a Linux-based desktop by the end of 2005."
It'll be interesting to see if they can achieve this goal, even getting a majority of their employees onto Linux would be quite an achievement! This is also good PR for IBM, so it'll be interesting to see. I think that if IBM is successful in doing this a lot of other companies will take it using Linux as a desktop OS rather than just a server OS. We'll see what happens. |

"Outside of its Open Desktop project, IBM has more than 600 people in 43 locations working on 150 open-source projects, Handy said." Now how does "working" on open source projects help IBM's bottom line? Is all the open source effort on IBM's part selling more hardware? Has the price of Webshere, for example, gone down because it is running on Linux or is it still $40,000 per processor? Yipes!
IBM needs to make a concerted effort to shore up the reliability of their e-Series Intel-based servers. We bought a boatload three years. Each of them has had their motherboard fail more than three times over this period. IBM had to have known that they had defective motherboards, but said nothing to us. Never again. That's a far cry from five years ago when we bought from IBM all of our desktops, laptops, and over 50% of our Intel-based and Unix-based-servers and all of our mainframes not to mention major integration contracts. We have to buy their mainframes, because they have a total monopoly in that area, but nothing else of theirs is coming through the door now. It is little wonder that it was eight years ago that their stock price peaked! |
