Longhorn News; Build 4053 Out in the Wild | |

Recently lots of Longhorn News has been arising. An article at ADT Magazine discusses the possible release date of Longhorn, which could be anywhere from 2006 to 2008, as well as the management of code in the upcoming operating system. Another article says that Longhorn will support the Windows XP user interface as well as the next generation UI currently in deverlopment, codenamed Aero. Unfortunately, Longhorn will not support the Windows 2000 UI. A new build of longhorn leaked according to iexbeta.com and a tweak guide is available. Next L3vel reports that build 4053 of Longhorn, Microsoft's next major version of Windows, has leaked. Most of the changes in this build include bug fixes, particulary with explorer.exe, which had a huge memory leak in previous builds. | ||

Avalon is the managed code framework that the Microsoft User eXperience team will build Aero on top of. Avalon is already present in current builds (as is WinFS, though neither are in final form). Technically, portions of Aero are present, but not the full experience, nor the DCE-accelerated Aero Glass experience. |

Because many of the security foundations of Longhorn are still being worked out, require kernel-level additions, as well as the replacement of the majority of Windows' infrastructure with managed code. This not only requires major functionality changes, but also breaks some existing ISV code. Also, the release date from the articl is pure speculation. MS still hasn't announced an official date.
That aside, XP SP2 includes many additions in the interest of security. New defaults, NX support for CPUs that have it, greater security and control over ActiveX components, email, and applications, and the recompilation of code using new compiler improvements and better exploit detection tools. Plus the service pack is free, wheras a new Windows release wouldn't be. Following SP2 will be Indigo and then Whidbey, which includes technologies like ClickOnce that developers can use to more easily make apps that can be used with partial trust. More secure code can be written today, but the bulk of improvements Longhorn offers will rely on developers switching to managed code (something many can do now, but others may require the extra functionality provided in Longhorn, and/or the time before Longhorn's release to work on a new version of an existing app). |

Dee: ... Like EVERY SGINLE other service pack, thier will be an express download, which only downloads the updates taht you need (which does significantly reduce download time if all your system is up to date.
Also, you will probably be able to order a CD update cheaple. Also, with XP 'Reloaded', there will probably be a 'step up' upgrade, like there was with Win98 to Win98SE, which costed about $20. |
