Envy News has posted a short review of the Nu Tech 8x DDW-081 recordable DVD drive. Here's a snippet from their review:
While the drive is a strong contender, it isn’t perfect. The DVD write performance is pockmarked by several stops and slowdowns. The listed Mt. Rainier feature is unavailable pending a future firmware release that will enable it. I also cannot explain the low CD-RW read speed results; the same disc used in the test, when read by my LiteOn drive, produced far better results.
Since finishing testing on this drive, several beta firmware revisions have appeared that enable two very nice features: DVD-R and DVD-RW. Those who bought this drive as a DVD+R/RW drive will soon have a dual mode drive courtesy of a small patch file, adding to the overall value. Once the promised Mt. Rainier firmware becomes available, the DDW-081 will move from the realm of a great buy to an unbelievable bargain.
You can read the entire review over at the Envy News website.
