Windows XP Boot Disks Released | |

Microsoft has released the long awaited Windows XP Boot Disk. The Windows XP startup disk allows computers without a bootable CD-ROM to perform a new installation of the operating system. The Windows XP startup disk will automatically load the correct drivers to gain access to the CD-ROM drive and start a new installation of Setup. You cannot upgrade from a Windows XP startup disk. | I think Microsoft said that with new updates/patches new boot disk downloads need to come out...that was the reason they didn't ship with XP. |

This is really a nonissue. All computers ive seen so far can boot the computer with the winxp cd. Also, in windows xp you can make a boot disk, it just doesn't have cdrom support. Any previous win9x bootdisk should let you install winxp. I installed winxp with a win98se bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com, and had no problems. I think the reason you cant make a bootdisk from the cd, and the reason why the retail cd's wont come with bootdisks, is because floppy disks are out dated. Macs dont ship with floppy drives, and i heard some companies are gonna stop shipping new pc's with floppies i believe. Years from now no one will be using floppies. Floppies cost more than cd's to make, so ms will save a lot of money. I'll download the floppy disk utility just to have it, but i dont think ill never need it.

Hmm. My old 486DX4/100 with a NEC 4x cdrom drive can boot from a CDROM. It's pretty rare to find a computer built in the past 4 years that didn't allow this.
It'd be even more rare to find a computer that wasn't built in the past 4 years that was compatible with XP. :) |
