XP's Raw Sockets: Raw deal? | |

"It suffers from being very complicated," Steven Gibson says, trying to explain why he thinks a little-known feature of some operating systems could spell doom for businesses on the Internet. Gibson runs Gibson Research, a highly regarded Laguna Hills, California, security research firm. The feature is something called "raw sockets," and it's in Windows XP, the newest version of Microsoft's Windows operating system. Internet businesses could find their access to the world buried in a flood of nonsense traffic that could exclude nearly everything else. Microsoft has yet to find a security hole it doesn't like, and Windows XP is no exception. In this case, the raw sockets feature can allow creators of denial of service (DoS) attacks untold levels of new power in their quest to bring the Internet to its knees. This is because the raw sockets feature makes it easy to command any computer running Windows XP to unleash a flood of packets that will more efficiently tie up the switches and routers upon which the Internet depends. | ||

| Yeah I think this is another "The sky is falling" type argument. He could be right, but I really doubt it. |

| I could be wrong but doesn't Windows 2000 also have "raw sockets"??? The problem is XP Home edition because it will be in the hands of people with little computer knowledge (most of the time) |

| Or better yet, if a trojan can get into your computer and be used to perfrom a DoS attack, because of the Raw Socket support, no law enforcement agency around could locate the origin of the attack. Its true that Unix and Linux can already do it, and so can Win9x if a custom driver is added, but there is a good point that if every new computer sold has Windows XP installed on it, and Joe Schmoe user opens an email that infects his computer with a trojan, and it sends itself to all his friends in his address book that also have XP running, there could be a problem. While I like what MS has done, I don't like there stance on this. Saying, "well, we've got a firewall built into XP that should protect users from this", thats a bunch of BS. |

| For those worried about remote desktop, it isn't a feature of XP home so it should be as much as a problem as linux/unix. |
