Pop-up advertisements have thrived for years despite numerous efforts to eradicate them, but now online marketers are seriously wondering whether the Web's most detested ad format is about to meet its match: Microsoft.

Wow, this is kinda an old article.
At any rate, I just hope people realize that when popups die because of blockers, far more anoying flash-based ads will take over. When those die, even more anoying techniques will be used.
This is an Ad/Ad Blocking arms race. The fact of the matter is that no matter who wins, we all lose.
If the ad people win, then we have to live with potentially annoying ads that distrupt our browsing.
The if ad-blocking people win, then we will have to pay hard cash for a lot of great content that's currently free.
Personally, I'll take the 2 seconds popup annoyance over having to shell out 10 bucks a month to browse content that used to be free.

I think that those flash based ads are more annoying and intrusive. I hate when it when you are surfing the web early in the morning and they start playing sound. The most annoying to me is when AIM starts showing Video Ads. Espn is the worse for that stuff.

#10,
You're right about that AIM Video Ad. What was on their minds when they thought that one up ? They KNOW it's being used in businesses everywhere. What a good way to get yourself kicked out of an office.
And if you have DeadAIM installed, I haven't figured out a way to mute the friggin' thing.
I suspect AOL knows this...

"Something to think about:
Why are pop-ups so hated when it only takes 1/8 of a sec to close each one, and most pages are pretty reasonable in the number they use?"
You _are_ kidding, right ?
"On the other had, TV ads are widely accepted by most people, even though they occupy 25+% of the time you watch TV?"
Not when you have a DVR :)
I never, ever watch live TV any more. Everything I watch is pre-recorded. When the commercials hit, I do 30 sec skips, and if I see one I want to watch, I do. If I'm not interested then I continue on.

#14, TL, inorder to get rid the AIM ads you have to un-install Flash. I did that but every freaking page on every freaking site kept asking me to intall it. Eventually I just gave in.

Those ads on the left, the paypal one, amazon..unfortunately they are so unobtrusive they do not generate any money. With ActiveWin.com, I try to sell enough ads to individual companies on standard banners so I don't have to run pop-ups, at least on the frontpage. However, when I don't have a specific company ad on a page, I have to do RON ads from the ad networks. And of that, most of the revenue is through pop-up ads. It's a little scary, indeed that, I won't have that back up to rely on. Who knows, this could be the demise of free websites such as this one.

#15 - I agree. We have cable feeds piping in CNBS, CNNfn, and Bloomberg all day long so I get the business, national and international news during the day.
I don't have much leisure time during the week to watch TV so, DVR is the way to go. I can watch three half-hour programs in about an hour. Without the constant interruption of commercials, the stories are always much better. Besides, I program just what I want to watch. This avoids countless hours in front of the TV channel surfing and becoming a couch potato.
Pop-up ads - a thing of the past - I have been using Googles tool bar and it works great. Hey, if you want to hit me with these pop-unders or flash based ads I say bye-bye.
#18 - I would rather pay a small fee and get just the content I want then suffer annoying ad mania. For example, I subscribe to the Wall Street Journal on-line edition, $5.95 a month (a good savings over the paper edition), because the paper edition is such a hassle and what do you do with all that paper when your done? I pay a subscription for Rush Limbaugh's content also (right wing conspiracy anyone? lol). Again, I don't have time during the day to listen to him, but I will listen to him over the net in the evening while finishing my contract work. I subscribe to Audible on a montly basis because I can download fiction and non-fiction and play it on my MP3 player while I am driving since I rarely have the time or inclination to read the same.
Spending on the above just makes for good time management. That way, I have more leisure time to really relax and enjoy myself.
