Windows 98 lifeline 'prompted by Linux threat' | |

Various research indicates that Windows 98 is still installed on about a quarter of all PCs, meaning that if Microsoft had stopped supporting the operating system as planned, the next time that a security bug was discovered, millions of PCs would be left vulnerable and users would be left with the option of either upgrading to a newer version of Windows, or looking for an alternative. Although many companies would upgrade because their applications or hardware require Windows, a significant chunk would be free to consider alternatives, such as Linux. | ||

Any company who is still running Windows 98 certainly does not have the technical expertise to properly maintain a Linux environment.
These are largely companies that go out, buy a PC at Best Buy, bring it back to the office... struggle to get it hooked up to their LAN so they can maybe share some files and an internet connection. But they leave the existing software already installed. Either that, or they have some custom piece of software that they aren't bothering to convert. |

My company has over 10,000 desktops spread across a entire state. For us to make sure every computer is running the latest OS is a impossible task.
By your very response condemning me, you confirmed my position. As I said, any company which is still running Windows 98 does not have the technical expertise to properly maintain a Linux environment. Perhaps I should have said 'technical policies and procedures in place' rather than expertise, but regardless, it has nothing to do with money and everything to do with your environment. I honestly can't imagine how any company would still be relying upon Windows 98. It's like a airline running planes with twice the maintenance requirements and half the fuel economy of modern planes... you're not going to be competitive. It's the fundamental problem of thinking labor is cheaper than spending money. You have to break that mindset. Think outside the litter box. |

#18 Anyone with half a clue... oh now I know why you have such a hard time understanding... knows that "GPL mandates that any of the work that we would do on these Linux PCs would be covered under the GPL" is such a crock that it baffles the mind. There is absolutely nothing stopping anyone from using commercial libraries on Linux (see Borland Kylix if you need an example, here's a link to help you out http://www.borland.com/kylix/index.html). There is also nothing you from using open source libraries and keeping all the GPL code separate (think DLL) to the rest of your code, in which case you will only have to release the code to the GPL components and not the commercial components. There are several commercial applications that use GPL components which are stored in a separate DLL. Stop being so clueless.
#19 "our lawyers said that the GPL covers basically everything" I think you should perhaps get a separate opinion. "for example, you use a Linux based router, that any packets that travel through them become subject to the GPL." And perhaps a third opinion too!! You sure you haven't been listening to Microsoft a bit too much rather than your "lawyers"? |
