Thanks, BobSmith. Los Angeles officials have asked that manufacturers, suppliers and contractors stop using the terms “master” and “slave” on computer equipment, saying such terms are unacceptable and offensive.
THE REQUEST — which has some suppliers furious and others busy re-labeling components — came after an unidentified worker spotted a videotape machine carrying devices labeled ”master” and “slave” and filed a discrimination complaint with the county’s Office of Affirmative Action Compliance.
In the computer industry, “master” and “slave” are used to refer to primary and secondary hard disk drives. The terms are also used in other industries

Here we have politically correctness gone amok. Personally, I would tell the people who are "offended" to STFU--something that's acutally offensive--rather than change industry standard terms that are inanimate and inoffensive.
People need to get a clue.

If someone was offended by such a term then they need to go see a shrink.
I really can not stand how sensitive people are, especially about something like this.
Cthulhu: I would probably say something much more offensive, and then tell them to STFU.... maybe bitch slap them a few times too...

Better stop shipping LA schools history books as well... I think they contain significant use of the "m" and "s" word also.
I wish there were greater details on how this got started. Too much time on someone's hands, I think....

Generally I do think this is being hypersensitive. On the other hand I see no rationale reason to use those particular terms. From reading the article that does seem to have been the point of the memo, simply to point out that they could use a better phrase, it wasn't any sort of mandate or demand.
The overreaction to these articles is generally more hypersensitive and over the top than the initial request. Which is interesting. Next we'll probably have the Republican party demanding we pass a constitutional amendment defending the use of the words Master and Slave to to refer to electronic devices.
As if there aren't things in this world more important to worry about... Next.

The amazing thing is that this PUBLIC servant is wasting taxpayer money on this idiocy, especially in a state (California) with some major financial problems...maybe that's part of the explaination.
Come on...get over it. It's not like the terms are plastered in 3" tall letters on the front of the devices.
Also, now these suppliers (the ones that are listening to this idiot) are wasting money making these changes...do you think it is coming out of their 'social goodness' fund, or from their profits???? NO WAY...they will raise prices to cover this crap.
Never underestimate the power of human stupidity....

so not only do we have to re-write the history books, but now the tech manuals too!!
instead of making technology easy, we should make it really difficult for these morons. If we are going to re-write all this stuff lets use only references to The Simpsons, South Park, The Matrix, LOTR, Monty Python, Star Wars and obviously Star Trek (to weed out the ones we dont want involved)
Things that are not equal should not be treated equal- there are times when the master/slave terms make perfect sense and changing them would imply diffrent behaviour. Primary and Secondary does not mean the same thing as Master/Slave.
(i wonder how they feel about multi-master!! just what we need more MS lawsuits!)

ThisIsNotMe - What's wrong with just calling it blue?
Locke - I propose a Constitutional Amendment to protect our French and German heritage and prevent people from renaming French fries and Hamburgers!

#20 It's just a shame that "French Fries" were invented in Belgium not France... which goes a long way to show the intelligence of the people who decided to rename them "Freedom Fries" as some sort of cheap-shot at the French because they wouldn't bow down to the American Administration.

Locke: They didn't do it because they French offended anyone, they did it because the French pissed them off.
They also quit drinking French wines and such.
Soda: But I very much like my sausberry steaks!

#16/17, There is no lawsuit, just a complaint. And I'm guessing Joe Sandoval (the complaintant) is hispanic, though I could be wrong.

kabuki - Well we tried calling them Belgian fries, but it just doesn't roll off the tongue.
Message to Jacques Chirac - Please stop educating your people. If you were going to wish to be on friendly turns with America you're going to have to be more gullible. This not believing our lies and fabrications is really putting a cramp on our relationship! Otherwise we will be forced to declare a boycott on the French Kiss!

I didn't mean to imply that I'd go for LA.
I didn't even mean I dislike Boise. I just find it rather empty.
