Thanks, BobSmith. Microsoft Corp., seeking a foothold in the Internet search business, approached Google within the last two months to discuss a partnership or even a merger, The New York Times said on Friday. MICROSOFT MAY still be interested in pursuing the Web search company at a later date, the report said, citing an executive briefed on the discussion, though its recent advances gained little traction. (MSNBC is Microsoft-NBC joint venture.) | ||

There might be a dragon in my garage too. Yeah, yeah, we've been through this one before. Microsoft might flip their little switch and disable all the PCs in China. Or they might use their little backdoor and let the FBI spy on anyone. Or they might..... The fact of the matter is, I've never seen a 5-second full-screen mandatory ad on any Microsoft web property. As I'm sure you all can guess, I spend a good deal of my time at a good many Microsoft web properties, so while my statements might be anecdotal, they have a fair amount of data nonetheless. So, in short, JWM, I see no basis for your "what if" theory. The earth might crash into the sun tomorrow, then it wouldn't matter what search engine you used to prefer. |

That's a nice non sequitor. A monopoly on productivity software really doesn't have a relationship with advertising policy.
Also, to answer your charge, the price of Microsoft Office 2003 Standard Edition is probably about the same as WordPerfect 5.1 was when it was released. Considering the number of applications, the feature set, the integration between apps, and the compatibility with existing documents, I think that Office is well priced. Curiously, Microsoft has been charging about the same about for Office for, well, forever. That means that they charged this price long before they had a monopoly, so, um, their price isn't really reflective of a monopoly. And, the same goes for Windows. Why don't I take another stab at that open document attack. When Microsoft wanted Excel to have a piece of Lotus 1-2-3's pie, the reverse engineered the format, and provided the ability to seemlessly read and write Lotus 1-2-3 documents. The .doc and .xls file formats have not changed in quite some time (about six years or so). Why hasn't anyone gone to the trouble to do to Microsoft what Microsoft had to do itself to get into the market? And if you claim that others already have done that (and done it well), then you've just admitted that the open document thing really has nothing to do with Office's supposed monopoly. |

| I have to say that right now I don't have a problem with the price of Office 2003 at all, I think for what you get in the package it's an excellent deal, assuming you make use of all the components. It is expensive - but you have to take into context what is included and the prices of each part like Word, Excel etc seperately. |

| I don't see adverts being a problem, but perhaps that is more due to the fact that we've been trying to keep the site running on adverts while people complained about it, yet if we didn't we would have vanished. Google has been excellent for years, I feel if they want to run ads let them, I think they can be just as clean looking if they do. |
