Microsoft Watch |
Posted By: Todd Richardson |
Thanks Anthony. At Microsoft's worldwide partner conference this week, Microsoft finally admitted that Longhorn won't see the light of day until 2006.
This isn't a guess on my part, educated or otherwise. Or flame bait. Or conjecture. This is straight from the horses' mouths.
At the show this week, several Microsoft execs casually slipped into their presentations that Longhorn is three years away from debut. Last time I did the math, that was not 2005, as promised just a few months ago. Nor is it even the wishy-washy "2005+" that a few execs had taken to attaching to their product timetables. The new target is 2006, plain and simple.

It's possible it is the Longhorn Server release that was being talked about as 2006 (or possible the Longhorn wave collectively).

#7, Microsoft likes their beta testers to be running all kinds of hardware, so just because you may not have the "latest and greatest" doesn't mean you shouldn't apply! Good luck!

for all you people saying "ill just get a Mac"-- well i've seen a G5 running 10.3 and it still sucks- but its the fault of the OS now.
in a side by side, visual comparision (like what every consumer that knows nothing about this stuff would see), my 1.2 athalon looks and feels faster.
Dont get me wrong, the hardware is mint and if Apple had this type of performance from 10.0 3 (or when ever it came out) years ago, that would have been great. BTW 10.3 is not 100% 64bit and untill it is it will not be amazing.
and I will be you anything that anyone that has used Windows and is used to getting things done with it will totaly hate 10.x- it is the most annyoing thing in the world
just think of the Switch paradoy posted here a few times- thats me after about 5 minuets using the damn thing (OS 9 still rules.. at least compared to X)
but to be fair, at least 10.3 has a dumbed down version of Windows Explorer!

"As usual, Microsoft officials didn't discuss specific dates, although casual mentions of the Longhorn wave coming "3 years out" caused rumors sites to explode with news items about yet another delay. A more likely scenario is that Microsoft will release the Longhorn products over time, culminating with the release of a new Windows Server version 18 months after the release of Windows Longhorn, a desktop product that will ship in home, professional, Media Center, and Tablet PC editions. Microsoft is trying to subtly communicate that Longhorn isn't just one product but rather a completely new architecture on which the company will build a suite of products. As the Longhorn wave crests in 2006 to 2007, Microsoft says, we can expect to see new versions of Microsoft Exchange (code-named Kodiak), SQL Server (code-named Acadia), and the first release of Microsoft System Center, which integrates Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) and Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM)."

The ABMer's Todo list:
Monday: Complain about how I am forced to upgrade what seems like every few months to the latest OS from MS.
Tuesday: Tell everybody how the second version of OS X released this year is just around the corner, so start saving up that $150.
Wednesday: Complain that MS is talking about the newest version of their OS when we have not yet had a chance to upgrade to Windows 98.
Thursday: Complain that MS is going to charge for an incremental upgrade.
Friday: Complain that I need to wait another [insert completely made up amount of time here] before I can get the latest OS from MS. Announce I am going to switch from Windows to OS X because of this wait.
Saturday and Sunday: Ignore claims that what I said Monday through Friday was completely contradictory; prepare to spew out the same complaints next week.

I gotta be honest...
I'm still pretty happy with WinXP. But they've got to keep it updated... I agree, a new IE with some new features would be nice. New service pack, that sort of thing...
In fact I think Microsoft should release new CDs and such with the service packs included, make it easy to streamline hotfixes in... that sort of thing.

.NET Framework 2.0 will be available in 2004. That's a little updating. As I understand it, SPs are slipstreamed when distrib'ed to OEMs. IOW, end users will have a Windows XP (with SPx) CD with their system. I know this was the case with Windows 2000. I'd assume Windows XP would work the same way.
Windows XP support.
Entering Extended Support: December 31, 2006
Exiting Extended: December 31, 2008
End of life: December 31, 2009
(see http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycleconsumer.mspx)
As we saw with Windows NT 4, I think if there is customer demand for extensions, Microsoft will bow to them. Just so my words aren't used against me, it is very possible they they'll stick to this plan, but if LH doesn't come out till 2006, I'd be very surprised if these dates didn't move at least 24 months in the future.

Um... the Cubs aren't playing the Red Sox yet.
Notice I say "yet"... because both the Cubs and the Red Sox will be in the World Series.

I hate baseball, but even I, the ultimate cynic and hater, must give the Cubs their do. After 95 years, it comes down to this fact: if they wain only one of the next (possibly) 2 games, they will represent the NL in "The Big Game."
Wow. I guess curses end.
So, although I don't like baseball, I still think it's a cool thing that the Cubs might go. My mom would be proud, I just said something nice about her team.
So, I guess I'm in the same boat as IronCladLou... Go Cubs.

#14,
10.3 (otherwise known as Panther) has not been released yet.
As far as I know, the G5's ship with 10.2.7.

montanagrizzly - "If you give Mozilla a fair, honest chance you will find it is much better than IE (on Windows anyway.) "
Mozilla still has a little ways to go before it's better than IE. I do have it loaded at home just to test for compatibility. The only advantage it used to have was the popup blocking, but with the google toolbar I don't have that issue.
But you're right. Microsoft can't just do the big bang, they've got to release incremental improvements over time. They should update IE to fix bugs, make minor UI improvements, etc.
